I've heard the argument before - I don't buy it, because it means that the folks who object to gay marriage only object to it being called "marriage", not the actuality of recognising homosexual relationships in law. If their argument is based entirely on semantics, it's complete bullshit. It's not based on that - they don't want homosexual relationships to be "rewarded" with legal benefits and protections.

There are many many types of relationships who will and do seek marriage status.

We've been through plural marriage ad infinitum on here, not to mention people who want to marry siblings, cats, inanimate objects and all the other random weirdness you've dredged up on these topics.
