Danno, you are missing the point. I'm not suggesting depriving people of civil rights based on someones science fiction novel.

Yet you are assigning civil Rights based on only one type of sexual habit.

Your limited idea of "rights" makes the bisexual choose just one sex in marriage.

Tsk Tsk, that just ain't right.

No Danno, you did.

NO, actually I never claimed "marriage" was a civil right, if I did believe that then the state would have no right to place parameters around what they accept as a "marriage".

Paul, we both know what i'm talking about, so no need to beat around the bush.

My point is, marriage is not a Federal issue. It's something that has always been left up to the states. The President has no say-so over any part of it. The only way that anything changes is the house/senate pass legislation that changes. Neither party is going to touch that one though with a 10-foot pole right now.

You mean like DOMA?

DOMA was a law to protect the individual states from recognizing a bastardized definition of marriage. It was to 'protect' the social norm of marriage.

The problem with DOMA and the Federal side of things has to do with immigration. If the United States as a whole would use civil unions in the same context, then this would be a non-issue. Unfortunately, that doesn't happen.

The problem here, as always, is the fact that government is involved in a civil contract between two individuals.

Of course there's the argument in regards to DOMA on the Full Faith and Credit clause, however at the same time congress has the power to write laws that give states the ability to by-pass this clause on issues they deem necessary.

I don't believe states should be forced to recognize a 'gay marriage' - However, if a state is not willing to recognize a 'gay marriage' and they offer a benefit based on "marriage" for heterosexual couples that are tied together through contract, then the state needs to offer an EQUAL alternative where the only part that is inherently different from a "marriage" is the name.

I think that's pretty strange to be honest. If the alternative is the same as the original thing, then it IS the same. Quibbling over the name is just an exercise in semantics.

sometimes at the end of the day, words are all that matter to some.

It's like where you and I might be ok with saying "damn" the religious nutter will say "dang."

... Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann hedged ...

... she dodged the question ...

... She also avoided Gregory's questions ...

... She did not offer a direct answer ...

... but would not offer an opinion ...

Well she also said she doesn't "judge", but that's obviously a lie.

I've heard the argument before - I don't buy it, because it means that the folks who object to gay marriage only object to it being called "marriage", not the actuality of recognising homosexual relationships in law. If their argument is based entirely on semantics, it's complete bullshit. It's not based on that - they don't want homosexual relationships to be "rewarded" with legal benefits and protections.

You have to wonder if the strategy of some is to deny, deny, deny, and hope they move to Europe.

There you go again....

Why do you speak as though homosexuals are the only ones being "kept out of the club"?

There are many many types of relationships who will and do seek marriage status.

Two men playing husband and wife is just one expression.

Lets be real if you recognize two men as married how can you with a straight face deny anyone else..... after all they are using the same exact arguments gay folks do.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."
