DO YOU REALLY NEED A CERTIFICATE OF RELIGION?

An Islamic marriage is also a legal marriage, so, if it's not recognized as legal, it's not Islamic either.

Hi Sofiyya, yes I agree but all countries with few exceptions consider a religious marriage alone legal. You have to file for a license and be married in a court of law. Why they don't allow just a religious marriage

I have no idea. It's the same in my country I was born in Ecuador and we marry in both religious and court weddings usually in the same day or close to each other. Thank you again.

Did I read correctly, they're now charging $50 for permission to marry at the consulate?

Hi Mithra, not that I know of. I reads at " http://egypt.usembassy.gov/consular/acs12.html " you still have to pay it. :( .

We didn't pay a fee for that part but that was back in Jan. 2006. We paid for stamps and stuff before getting married but there wasn't a fee for the permission paper. I'm surprised they're charging so much now.

You are paying a notary fee that is all. Becasue the form has to be notarized for the Egyptian minastry to except it now. Not a big deal.

A certificate of religion is required if you are an Egyptian Christian. Christians need to verify that they are free to marry and this certificate comes from the church. It took several days for my husband to finally get all the stamps he needed by different offices within the church. If you are Egyptian muslim, you don't need this as they practice polygamy. As the USC, I did not need anything regarding my religion, just my verbal statement that I was Christian. However, this was for the legal ceremony only. We were not permitted to marry within the church because I was not coptic christian and I was previously married.

Perish the thought that the Church would actually have rules! Who would have imagined that whole divorce thingy doesn't fly with the Catholic and Orthodox religions?

Thank you Kokylolo and Staashi, I did not need a certificate of Religion and everything was easy and the people were nice with the exception of the USA Embassy. Really , what right do they have to treat citizens of the USA like dirt. I know they have to warn me of things that might happen but to be nasty about it is uncalled for. Once the guy from the USA said what he had to say and I still wanted the marriage certificate he just shook his head like I was supposed to say "ok ok I'll go back home then" GEEEEEEZ what nerve :bonk:.

Anyway I was married Oct 15 Th I'm so happy my husband is one of a kind and I don't regret a thing, I love his, he loves me and that's all that matters!(L)

Thank you to everyone for posting this might help someone down the line. Hugs to all of you, bless you all. (F)

No, you wouldn't need one. But if you married a Christian Egyptian, he would. I understand what you mean about the Embassy. The first man that helped us was Egyptian and cold until he saw my husband and I playing and laughing affectionately with each other. His attitude changed after that. The second man was American and he was the one who put the seal on the affidavit of marriage. He was nice and asked some questions, I could see where he was going with his line of questioning until he asked me what I did for a living. Then his questioning stopped and he said, "Normally, I have something I say right now to Americans marrying Egyptian men. However, I think you know already what it is I say and I'm sure it would not matter to you one bit." The entire conversation was eye to eye contact. I replied,"I believe you are correct and thank you." He said, "Congratulations!" And we were out of there...with a sigh of relief.

How nice he was respectful to both of you and I got the same cold Egyptian old man. I didn't like him at all and was just about to tell him a few words but I bit my tongue. I don't know what you do for a living but are there any openings :rofl:. As an adult I consider their questions intrusive and an invitation of my privacy yet I understand why they do. The way they do and the shaking of their heads for not saying "ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh ok I'll go home then" was a bit annoying to say the least.

So very happy it was nice for you someone has to be treated with respect.

Hugs, (F)

Oh and yes you have to pay $50 now for the marriage certificate. No comment!
