Childs Social Security Number

Hi,

I now have my 2 year permanent residency green card and my work authorisation so all my paperwork is in order.

My husband was looking to claim for my 12 year old daughter on his tax return as a dependent now that we're married however I believe that to do so, she would need a social security number. When I looked on the Social Security website it said that non-US Citizens would only be issued a number for work purposes. Can I get one for her? Without it, she can't open a bank account either so it seems that she'd be at a disadvantage.

Your advices would be appreciated.

thanks

Brenda

Does yr daughter have her own green card for 2 years as well and a state ID? If she does, she can certainly get an SSN, she needs 2 types of ID to get the SSN. Just walk in there and apply!

Yes your husband can claim her as long as she has been living with him all the time you all been there, he definitely can claim her, but to do so, she need her SSN

I only have my permanent residency for 10 years and I have SSN, I got it with only my work authorization card, even before I got the temporary green card, as long as she has a card of some sort from homeland security, she can apply with work authorization, she can also get an ID with her green card and any evidence to show she lives in your home.
