Applying for the SSN#

We got the SSN and card in just 7 days. We went to two social security administration offices. It was funny how the two offices interpreted the law differently. One said you are not qualified for SS# because you are not permitted to work yet and offered to issue a denial letter - (which ofcourse we refused and tell them not to proccess the application at all). Alabama state laws require that you need the SS# to be able to get married in the state. And without being married, there is no way you can procceed with the k-1 journey!!

She even suggested that we can go to another state to get married if we can't get married in Alabama because of the SS#.

We went to another office and they did not even raise any question as to whether I was qualified or not. It took less than 5 minutes and I was told my application was approved. This is in the same state and one cannot but wonder if the officers have the same trainning or manual!!

Now we have his Social security card and can't wait to get married and awiat the arrival of our son in the coming weeks.

Many thanks to VJ because we knew all along that some of the officers are not familiar with the k-1 visa procedures in relation to SS#, so all along we kept our cool. VJ is great!!!!!

I'm so confused about the SSN process. Some people have had problems, some people haven't. I think I'll wait until after I'm married to even apply.

Some states require that you have a valid SS# to get married. Moreso the social security administration website is clear on this issue via this link: http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/576 . Just don't understand if their staff have access to this information.

K-1's are entitled to SSN. However, you don't need one to marry in Alabama if you testify that you do not have a SSN. http://probate.mobilecountyal.gov/

SSA staff often don't know their own rules, as well as marriage clerks (I just this week responded to someone who reported they needed SSN to marry in missouri and I found the law which said they didn't).

Either way, you're all set :) Happy marriage!

Yeah, my fiance's state's website says that a social security number is required to get a marriage license, however, we called and they said since I am a Canadian citizen, I don't need one. So who knows.
