Bull$hit.

Everybody on these boards knows I live in WV, which isn't a high COL state. Milk is around 3.50 a gallon right now. I wouldn't be able to find apples or tomatoes for the price you claim. Or cheese.

Reinhard's figures are higher than what I would pay here. But I think you are lying about some of the prices in your area.

like i said. Sucks to be you.

Come live here, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

people do eat expensive ... lets see ... to further help lower costs ...

milk ... yea generic is a lot lower price than brands. also if milk prices get higher ... there is always generic powdered milk which can be mixed with the regular or substituted

lettuce, tomatoes, etc ... it's summer time. why buy when you could grow your own

can of soup? you would buy? make your own (you do have a garden if you're trying to cut the food bill ... right??? )

if not, generic brand frozen veggies in bulk ... also, get to know someone who has a garden (offer to help tend the thing in trade)

bread ... when i lived back east the local bakery had a "thrift store" (not the normal retail outlets) that sold day old bread. prices were incredibly low. sub $1/loaf was very common. (you can always make your own too ...)

lunch meat ... what are you nuts?? save your $$ and use the normal meat and cut into slices (providing you are not trying to cut ground meat) . cost per lb of lunch meat is usually higher than regular meat.

People living in $500 a month, utilities included apartments don't have land to put in a garden.

I want to go live in a bake oven so I can be pleasantly surprised over the cost of living with my minimum wage job?

Hardly not.

Actually you can easily grow your own tomatoes, herbs, peppers, onions, etc. if you live in an apartment here. You can make a real good use of your balcony with some planters.

Urban revitalization at its finest.

And for the third time, how about that fuel efficient car?

In 2010, 4.4 million made min wage or less (versus about 2 million in 2008; Go Obama!). The majority of these are in hospitality, therefore their tips typically bring them above minimum wage.

So roughly min wage earners make up 6% of hourly workers and less than 2% of the population. Eliminating it would not have much of an impact on the other 98% of the population (except lowering cost/price at McDs).

balconies and window ledges work. just think outside the box a little and you'd be pleasantly surprised.

also ... not all apartments are massive buildings. a small conversation with the management could get you a plot. I know people who have gotten "out of the way" garden patches approved.

Balconies and window ledges will yield enough veg to supplement a teeny food budget?

Look, I am all for doing what it takes to "make do". But I think it's nonsensical to come up with industrious ways a person can tolerate poverty. It really sounds like crying "let them eat cake".

"Go buy yourself a pot and seeds at the Dollar Store. Me, I'm getting my organic veg at the Farmers Market"

POVERTY? POVERTY?

Man, you need to take a damn look around at what "poverty" really is.

You get Medicaid, hosing allowance, and food stamps.

For working full time minimum wage? Nooooooo.

Paul is going with the example of a single person for his analysis. A single person would not qualify for any of these benefits working full time minimum wage. Not unless there were other underlying issues, such as mental illness, mental retardation, or some type of social recovery issue.

They work up to the max, then go on unemployment.

Depends on the state. Those programs are administered by the states and local government.
