I most definitely want every vote counted. It is the backbone of our form of government and it is what keeps us free as a Nation. Voter fraud is a fact of life since the very first election was held to the present. All safeguards should always be in place in every election.

Getting back to the OP. The machines clearly have a problem and are open to fraud. They should be safeguarded or not used. Since they are a single use device the solution shouldn't be a hard one. Just imbed the program on a chip and make the only variables possible are the candidates running and the votes cast. New chips could be issued for each new election. A little like the old Nintendo games. They can't be reprogrammed.

Hi Gary,

You obviously didn't watch the whole video:-). If you had you would have seen how easily they were able to manipulate the vote and leave no trace. I agree, they are extremely susceptible to fraud and they should not be used. Since it seems to take forever to get a valid vote count anyway, perhaps going back to the simplest form of vote would be the easiest even if it does take longer to tally - paper ballots and a simple pencil.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Paper ballots do work, if the polling station has enough of them to go around. That was another problem that popped up during the fiasco I mentioned earlier in Montgomery County. They also ran out of envelopes for sealing the paper ballots. Talk about getting too comfortable and reliant on technology; fortunately the poll hours were extended an extra hour to 9 pm.

Paper ballots can also be susceptible to security issues, especially in particular situations where polling stations are ill prepared and backup systems are not robust.

Blowing the Whistle on Diebold

On July 13, the Pensacola, Fla.-based law firm of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. filed a “qui tam” lawsuit in U.S. District Court, alleging that Diebold and other electronic voting machine (EVM) companies fraudulently represented to state election boards and the federal government that their products were “unhackable.”

Kennedy claims to have witnesses “centrally located, deep within the corporations,” who will confirm that company officials withheld their knowledge of problems with accuracy, reliability and security of EVMs in order to procure government contracts. Since going into service, many of these machines have been linked to allegations of election fraud.
