it probably depends on whether you're visiting (i.e. tourist) or if you've moved there permanently (i.e. immigrated).

Your Dutch license is only valid if you're a tourist...if you've immigrated to Cali, you have a limited number of days in order to downgrade your license. :-)

I say downgrade because most European (and some Asian) countries have much stricter training requirements than the US.

Here in Ohio I'm allowed to drive 1 year with my Belgian/international license. After that I have to do a test on the computer (40 questions), a vision test, a park-the-car-between-some-cones-test, and a driving test on the roads (5minutes); Automatic or stick doesn't matter. Piece of cake compared to Belgium

If not having a license at all works for all the illegals in California, I'm sure your Dutch license will work just fine. If you get pulled over just say something like; "No obla eenglace" and you should be good to go. Having a lawn mower visible in your trunk helps also.
