Worst place I lived in London bar none was Harringay, not that far from Tottenham. Sheesh. It was back then a flashpoint of Turkish and Kurdish tension. My ex got mugged in our street, we regularly heard gunshots, and we slept with a golf club and baseball bat within reach after my ex was threatened with a scaffolding pole in a case of mistaken identity as he entered the flat. Shortly after that, we moved to leafy Blackheath, and within two weeks of the move we saw on the news that a torture chamber was discovered in the basement of one of the houses on our street.

Lovely Victorian house though, and an easy walk to Highgate Woods.

1950 it was about 4%, now its about 8%. Much of the immigration came from commonwealth countries such as India, Pakistan, Australia etc. (so "foreign" might not be the right word)

How many times do you need to be told that this was nominally about class (and the underclass) and not race? That the majority of those rioting and looting were white? That many of those taking part were just opportunistic morons across the social spectrum? That most of the people on benefits in Britain are white?

Who said I support paying people to do nothing with their lives? The safety net is horribly abused in Britain. However, I am glad it is there. I have benefited from it myself when I lost my job.
