My fiance and kids are here with me. According to the recommended timeline of events, the non US Citizen should 1. Seek the social security number first. 2. Get married. 3. Go back and change the name at the Social Security Administration

Why this sequence? What does it achieve in the strive to complete the AOS? We visited the Social Security office and applied for a card 4 days after her arrival. The staff member stated that the computer would automatically search the Dept Of Homeland Security database for her entry in another 10 days. The application would then be submitted. They knew of the Fiance process before I mentioned it during the visit. The marriage will take place next week. We can't wait. I love my family. I was sick and tired of being alone. I am so at peace now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I filed mine after the marriage which was more than 2 months later when i arrive in the US. I processed everything right after marriage including my AOS and renewal of passport so that I have the same name on all identification. saved us time to process too! but you can do what they told you to, it's just hassle to go back and forth to SSA

The reason is that sometimes SS employees will sometimes mistakenly deny a SSN to a K-1 who has since married. Also that suggestion is probably from a time when states required SSN to get married. Also, getting a first SSN is married name can be confusing, because the records do not match with POE records.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

That was BS. The application should have been submitted right then and there. They are supposed to input everything and do an intital verification request. If it doesn't verify, it is put in the pending file, and another verification request is tried after the person has been here 10 days.

i have no idea why that is the process. we just change the name on my wifes ssn yesterday.

keep in mind before you can change the name on your wifes ssn you must have two forms of I.D.

one with the maiden name and one with the married name. (i am just telling you what my experience was with the local SSA)

nope it doesnt make sense to me either. dont forget to bring a notarized copy of you marriage certificate. it is necessary.

we have been run through the ringer with this name change thing on the ssn.
