Havana - Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf’s penchant for talking to reporters is well known and he was hard put to restrain himself when the Indian media confronted him soon after he and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh issued a joint statement after their talks.

The brief interaction, in the lobby of the International Convention Center, ran something like this:

Q: General saab, kuchh to bolenge?

A: I always like to talk to the Indian media. I know you have been coming to my hotel. I will talk to you later. It should not happen that I say something that creates misunderstandings and hampers the peace process that we want to move forward. I will not renege on my commitment not to speak. We are not supposed to respond to queries.

(He looked visibly unhappy that diplomatic fetters had been put on his speaking).

Q: Are you happy with the talks?

A: Yes, they were very good.

Q: Would you call it a breakthrough?

A: Yes.

Q: You can at least say ‘Mohabbat Zindabad (May love prevail)’.

A: Mohabbat Zindabad!
