I don't think having the characters marry is meaningful. Obviously if people have concluded that the characters are gay, that interpretation still exists without it needing to be set in concrete.

There's no point really. Children's fictional characters have been updated before but usually only when they are so dated that they no longer reflect the traditional values of the day. I don't think Bert and Ernie need 'updating'

Social graces, not cognitive skills, are prerequisite now to even enter kindergarten. Things like sharing and accepting diversity are being taught on children's programming, along with the Letter of the Day.

Are they? I don't think anyone here knows exactly who has clicked the 'Like' button on that page or why they did it. You are assuming a serious political motivation for this, when a lot of these types of things on Facebook are driven by humour.
