I get my news from the BBC.

I have had BBC bookmarked on my favorites for years now. It's on all the news networks... BBC, CNN, Guardian.uk,...you name it. It's not something that can be kept secret.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Your lack of debate skills are showing.

Read what you wrote. There is nothing to debate. Your statements show you are totally out of touch with reality and how the world works. Blame capitalism and not US immigration policy? Jeez!

Countries simply do not open their borders to the lowest common denominator in the race to the bottom. Blaming capitalism rather than the politicians that set policy that is supposed to be in the best interests of the citizenry is absurd. Your statements make no sense.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

The first rule of debate is not to insult the other party. Which you did. Hence my statement.

I do not believe that those 125,000 visas are issued to the "lowest common denominator". Oh sure, you do have the occasional sweet potato farmer who actually bothers to petition the Service to legally bring over seasonal workers. Nonetheless, bottom line is US business wants these workers, whomever or wherever they might be. These businesses make sure their voice is heard. Thus a legal path remains for alien workers to come to the US.

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.

Wrong. It's not the US that wants these workers, it's the large corporations who do. Lobbyist along with US politicians who sold us out...but not the US. Don't get us mixed up with the likes of MS and corrupt politicians who could give two sh*ts less about selling this country out to fatten their bank accounts.

I think you should take that up with your Congressman!

I hear nothing but silence and crickets from the usual open borders crowd.

You hear crickets because your OP is bogus. It considers the economic effect of immigration from one side of the ledger only: the effect upon labor supply. It says not one word about the effect on consumption demand. And so, it's disingenuous and vacuous. An honest appraisal of the economic effects of immigration will recognize that it's a two edged sword. Every new human within our borders is both a potential worker in our labor force, competing with other jobseekers. And, he or she is also a potential consumer, adding demand to our population. Demand which requires more supplied goods and services. Demand which is the very thing (along with jobs) sorely lacking to kickstart this weak economy. The economic value of every new immigrant needs to be considered from the perspective of whether the net harm they may cause by displacing a working American is greater or lesser than the net benefit they may bring through additional demand. Keep in mind as well that the demand function extends to their non-working dependents who don't compete for jobs but do require goods/services. It's a complex calculation and I won't argue simplistically that immigration is always net-positive economically. But it's equally simplistic to argue that it's always, across the board, net-harmful economically. The economics are complex. Your OP treats the subject tritely. Hence, crickets you shall get.

Your assertion that capitalism means that anything goes and there are no rules is absurd. Along with the assertion that immigration policy is set in stone and cannot be altered. It may fit in with your personal beliefs to blame capitalism first, but I don't buy into that boogie man as the sole blame for stupid and illogical policies that are set by government.

Step A. Write your congressman. Phone his office. Don't forget to mention campaign finance reform when you are belly-aching about immigration policy.

Step B. Learn who the companies are who import workers. Do not buy their products or services.

Step C. Wash.

Step D. Rinse.

Step E. Repeat.

Potential consumer...yada yada.

Reality says...large corporations are seeking cheap foreign labor. Now is it jobs for Americans, or jobs for foreigners? And save the possible future consumer spiel. We heard enough of that over the years from the same government that has brought this country to it's knees. And I'm not just talking about last months budget drama.

How about we put Americans first for once. Like all those Americans that want to put food on their table, pay their bills, and raise a family. Those same Americans that want to send their children to college so that they can get a decent paying job without being under cut by some cheap foreign labor.

Why are you even taking time to post on this topic other than to suck up bandwidth?

On another note, the Tea Party has immigration in their sights. So yes, something is going to be done about it. This country is finally starting to wake up.

At least my band width sucking is limited to evening hours. Some of us have jobs.
