Puritans were exiled to America, along with the debtors and other social misfits.

They still had their witch hunts in the UK and France. A bunch of religious fanatics. The US just got the worst of the lot is all....like the really hardcore religious wing nuts.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Obviously this is only tangentially related to the topic of this thread, but why are the Greeks and Romans the founders of Western Civilization? Yes, there were influences. But the middle ages provide a gap between the Greeks and Romans and the rise of western civilization. Further, western civilization is morally defined by the Judeo-Christian tradition, which has obvious contradictions with Greek and Roman moral traditions.

Do you know which historical forces intervened between the decline of Rome and Byzantium, and the Renaissance?

Except when they were "rediscovered" during the Renaissance.

What/Who was rediscovered? The Greeks and Romans? Sure, certain parts of the Greek and Roman culture influenced the revival towards knowledge, beauty, and progress that characterized the Renaissance. On the other hand, various ideas of the Greeks and Romans have been proven false (the earth is the center of the universe, for example, and is flat).

In any event, I assume when we talk about the good moral influences of the Greeks and Romans we're not talking about slavery, totalitarianism, misogyny, racism, infanticide, or pederasty. And by the way, homosexuality in Ancient Greece mainly consisted of 30-60 year old men raping the 12-15 year old adolescents that they were mentoring. We're not talking about consensual, dedicated, long-term relationships between mature adults.

In short, the Greeks and Romans had certain intellectual influences on modern Western culture. But morally they were a long way off from what we consider acceptable today. So why make an appeal to their very questionable moral authority?
