Now keep in mind this is meaningless right now. However I wonder what their 'intentions' are as far as building new carriers, nuclear subs, etc...

No one can touch our Navy at this point mind you. We have the largest naval fleet in the world for a reason. One that can't even be surpassed by combining all other nations fleets.

I just find it interesting that China is making this move though.

Why wouldn't they?

It won't be long until they have the biggest navy.

The Naval Update Map shows an approximation of the current locations of U.S. Carrier Strike Groups (CSGs) and Amphibious Ready Groups (ARGs), the keys to U.S. dominance of the world’s oceans. A CSG is centered on an aircraft carrier, which projects U.S. naval and air power and supports a carrier air wing (CVW). The CSG includes significant offensive strike capability. An ARG is centered on three amphibious warfare ships, with a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) embarked. An MEU is built around a heavily reinforced and mobile battalion of Marines.

Carrier Strike Groups

  • The USS John C. Stennis with CVW 9 embarked is on a scheduled Western Pacific Ocean and Arabian Gulf deployment.
  • The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower CSG with CVW 7 embarked is training and preparing naval aviators for future carrier-based operations in the Atlantic Ocean.
  • The USS George H.W. Bush CSG with CVW 8 embarked is under way in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR).
  • The USS Abraham Lincoln with CVW 2 embarked is conducting operations in the Pacific Ocean.
  • The USS George Washington CSG with CVW 5 embarked is participating in Talisman Sabre 2011, a bilateral exercise intended to train Australian and U.S. forces to improve combat readiness and interoperability.
  • The USS Ronald Reagan CSG with CVW 14 embarked has deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet AOR conducting close air support missions as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Amphibious Ready Groups/Marine Expeditionary Units

  • The USS Boxer ARG with the 13th MEU embarked is under way in the U.S. 5th Fleet AOR supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts.
  • The USS Bataan ARG with the 22nd MEU embarked is on a port visit to Souda Bay, Greece.
  • The USS Makin Island is under way off the coast of southern California conducting routine operations in preparation for the ship’s maiden deployment.
  • The USS Bonhomme Richard is on a port visit to Seattle.

The US has a big navy. That's been posted already.

I'll repost what I said above, "it won't be long until China has the biggest navy."

A conventional naval conflict between the US and a "larger than our Navy" China would be tough. We'd lose far too many sailors just from being outmanned, but we'd still have the upper hand in tactics, preparedness, and firepower, among other assets. I'd be afraid if the Chinese used Satellite Systems or massive hacking to disable our systems, as has been hypothesized since the early 90s.

They bought that POS over a decade ago from Ukraine in an auction for US $20 million.

Beijing plays down the Varyag's significance by emphasizing that even after sea trials, it will take two to five years to fully outfit the carrier and prepare it for active service, and that the Varyag is intended more for training and scientific purposes than for aggressive or even defensive military use.

How long is "won't be long" ... 500 years?

$20 million vs. $6.2 billion...That's like a pathetic $20 compared to $6,200!

USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77)

Cost: $6.2 billion (2001)

Most_Expensive_US-Military_Vehicles_USS_Bush.jpg

Short-Note: Named after World War II veteran and former President of the United States, George H. W. Bush, the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) is the final Nimitz super-carrier to be produced for the US Navy. It was commissioned in 2001 and built by Northrop Grumman for a cost of $6.2 billion.

The carrier was completed in 2009, and is docked in Virginia. At almost 1,100 feet in length, it’s one of the longest warships in the world. Its top speed is over 30 knots, which it reaches with the help of two onboard nuclear reactors. This power source is capable of keeping the ship running for more than twenty years without once having to refuel.

A naval battle between the US and China wouldn't even be considered seeing how with our navy and air force the battle might last a total of two hours tops depending on how long it took for their tubs to sink.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Chinese subs have been shown to tail carriers undetected.

In the end the more carriers you have....the more expensive hardware you might have on the ocean floor.

That's why I say a 'conventional naval conflict.' The reality is otherwise, unless the Chinese manage to do what I mentioned in the second part of the post you quoted.

China could load up guys in rowboats and do some damage since there are so many of them.

It's long been whispered they have EMP firing satellites.

They bought that POS over a decade ago

Coupled with the secrets they've stolen over the last decade, it will be interesting to see what it ends up as.

It's not the size of the boat...it's the motion in the ocean!

Too many targets to engage simultaneously.

Chinese subs have been shown to tail carriers undetected.

In the end the more carriers you have....the more expensive hardware you might have on the ocean floor.

It's not like the Chinese have disclosed all their secrets!

You should read up on the navy's assessment of small, fast attack boats that Iran has prepared for counterattack if we venture too far into their territorial waters. Our navy would still win, but there would simply be too many targets to hit and they couldn't stop them all.

China will no doubt have the same strength in numbers.

a boat they didn't even build, diesel powered, and limited to 45 days cruising...with a stolen aircraft design that is not proven, and carried in very small numbers. i am not impressed.

You don't have to be impressed by their capabilities... but you can't discount their sheer numbers!

As soon as they figure out a way to transport all their warriors, the rest of the world is toast.
