New Zealand has EXTRA background check?

Okay, so we got our 1-130 approved. Mailed off Packet 3 to the American Embassy in Seoul. We also had to mail them a form to submit to the New Zealand police so the New Zealand police can do a "full" background check on my husband. We thought, cool, no problem. We have had to order background checks from New Zealand for work (we're international teachers) and were always amazed because NZ got us the background checks in about a week.

Turns out, when it comes to getting a greencard the New Zealand police take at least 30 days to do a background check. WHY? I'm just wondering, pure curiosity, what are they doing? Why does it take a week to order a background check for work but it takes 30 days to get one for a greencard?

So now my husband and I have just kind of ground to a halt. We were so happy because it only took 3 weeks for our I-130 to get approved. Now we're just...well...sitting here.

Has anyone from New Zealand ever run into this?

Thanks for the replies, I feel relieved now. We haven't set our interview yet because (this might just be the Embassy in Korea) said we need to wait for the DS-230 and the background check to be "approved" before they will let us schedule an interview. I was really wondering what was going on. Thanks everybody!

Okay so tomorrow will make it 27 days since the Seoul Embassy received DS-230 Part I.....I couldn't stand it anymore and emailed them and asked had they received the New Zealand police records yet. I know I should be more patient, but the weather in Korea sucks right now and we need a little good news right now. Cross your fingers!

Just wanted to do a final follow-up on this thread. We've been approved, the background check from New Zealand came back, and we've been told it's time to schedule that final interview. We're so happy, and thrilled at the prospect of going home. :-) Thank you to everyone who commented. :-)
