I'm living in Japan with my fiance, but are hoping to make it back to America as soon as possible. Our main concern is that we don't want to be apart, so I was thinking to live in Japan as long as I can with her while doing the visa paperwork. But I read on another site that if we signed the papers and I then tried to sponsor her visa, that I would have to be in America to do it?

Is it possible to get her a visa while I'm living abroad? How long does the process take nowadays by the way.

You must have a US domicile, or show real intent to establish domocile. You can show domocile by having a US adddress even if you are in Japan for now, file US taxes, have a US drivers license, etc, etc--if you have none of that, then you have to show intent to establish a domocile.
