I was in Oakland last week early in the morning with a couple hours to kill. No problems at all. I guess everybody sleeps in after a night of mayhem.

I lived at Center Street at the corner of 12th Street, West Oakland. You can go see it on Google Maps. My old house is right there, right behind that grass triangle. I walked all the way from Rockridge Bart to my house, and rode my bike to and from work in Berkeley down Martin Luther King Jr. Had one incident in the middle of one Saturday night, close to my house where a guy with rocks in his hand tried to get some money from my boyfriend and me, but we just told him we had nothing, and he went away. I think there is more black on black violence there, than black on white. Two houses down from us, a nephew and uncle got into some type of domestic incident, one had a knife, the other a shot gun. If you play it cool and don't act like a scaredy-cat, not much is going to happen to you. However, if you are with someone who might appear hispanic or black and you go through the projects, you are probably more likely to get harassed, because I think they assume you are from a rival gang. I found that happened to me a couple of times in San Francisco, when I was with someone from South America. One of the guys I was with in the Lower Haight got a knife put to his chest, but we managed to run. The other got beat up at McAllister St. at Webster, and had to get stitches. I lived a couple of blocks away from the projects in various locations in SF, and as long as I avoided those few blocks, things were fine. Just don't go in their neighborhood!

The clerk asked me to go after them because he couldn't leave the store unattended. I told him, sorry, ain't my beer, ain't my store, ain't none of my business.

How incredibly civic of you. What a Samaritan. Couldn't even be bothered to whip out your cell phone and call 911 for the cops to come by, huh? Just walk on, not your problem.

Then conservatives complain about how the country is going to sh!t because nobody gives a damn.

Richmond CA has more gang/drug/violence problems than Oakland.

Parts of Oakland, especially in the Hills, are very nice and have gorgeous homes overlooking the Bay.

And what would you do liberal tough guy? Beat 'em up, get the beer back, and be the big hero? I doubt it.

Call the cops? Ha! The bloods are already safe drinking beer in the crib by the time the cops arrive to fill out the report. Shows how much you know about how the real world operates.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

We were at 20th and Broadway, for the oath ceremony at the Historic Paramount Theater. Incredible place and an example of early Depression architecture, before the country went bluenose.

BTW: The Cafe Madrid makes an excellent Egg and Chorizo on Toast.

Yeah, I lived up in the hills by Rockridge for a while. Just a beautiful view!

This type of mob mentality is pretty common here in Houston. Young black kids mobbing a convenience store en mass and ripping the place off while the poor Indian or Pakistani clerk stands by helplessly intimidated. I've actually seen it personally. Black kids walked into a convenience store, grabbed several cases of beer, and walked out without paying or saying a word. The clerk asked me to go after them because he couldn't leave the store unattended. I told him, sorry, ain't my beer, ain't my store, ain't none of my business. Why get killed or maimed when you don't have a horse in the race.

I used to go to the gym where I met an HPD cop. The guy had lots of stories. He'd catch black kids stealing and when the kid's parent came down to the jail to get the kid, the parent would curse the cops out for arresting the kid. No wonder these kids are what they are. No cure for that mentality but a bullet.

This kinda reminded me of a local story which had a crazy ending.

Mother with 16 yr old daughter shoplifting at a local clothing store gets noticed by security so they flee the store with security giving chase.

They proceed about 150 yards down an embankment where both mother and daughter... along with security slide into a rain swollen creek.

Security guy gets out, but both Mom and daughter drown. The mothers body is located as she had an ankle monitor on but the last I heard, the daughters body was not yet recovered.

While this woman is clearly part of the Under-tow of society, it's a tragic ending none the less.

All racists stink.... including black racists.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I don't have any knowledge of Seattle's farmers, but I know my FILs business would be MUCH better off in TX (which is why they're moving)....I'm not going to say too much about his biz cos it's not my place to, but he has a very nice company, which has now suffered because of whom he can subcontract out to, because he's not a minority owned business.

Smoking in bars? Look, I've been a smoker and a non smoker. And smoking in bars is really not about 'personal choice' when second hand smoke is lethal. However, if there were smoking bars and non-smoking bars, I think that would be fine, too.

That's the thing though. If peeps don't want to deal with second hand smoke in a bar...then don't go. That's where the choice comes in. If there isn't any non smoking bars to choose from...well that should say something right there. Let people have choice...including the business owners.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Well no, not really Kip. The choice now in many places is the other way around: if you want to smoke in a bar do it outside or don't go. Seems reasonable to me.

Ya we wouldn't want to let people make their own decisions and choices including the bar owners now would we. If someone doesn't want to go to an establishment that allows smoking then don't go. Seems easy enough. If owners want to or don't want to allow smoking...well that should be their decision/choice.

Making your own decisions to smoke or not smoke and if you smoke - do it outside. That's letting people make their own decisions.

Bar owners probably don't give a toss, so long as the laws they adhere to don't adversely affect trade. That certainly hasn't been the case here.
