U.S. Economy Adds 117,000 Jobs In July, More Than Expected

this minute

(RTTNews) - The U.S. Economy added 117,000 jobs in July, a more robust figure than most economists had predicted, according to figures released Friday by the Labor Department.

The job growth was entirely in the private sector, with new 154,000 private sector jobs offsetting a decline of 37,000 government positions lost.

Furthermore, the unemployment rate, measured by a different survey than job growth, ticked down slightly to 9.1 percent, while most economists had expected it to hold level at 9.2 percent.

Health care employment grew by 31,000 jobs in July, with the retail sector adding 26,000 new jobs.

Manufacturing jobs also grew, with nearly all of the 24,000 new jobs coming in the manufacturing of durable goods, according to the DOL.

However, government employment continued to contract in July, shedding 37,000 positions, 23,000 at the state and local level.

The average workweek held relatively level at 34.3 hours, according to DOL statistics, while average hourly earnings ticked up 10 cents to $23.13.

Previous estimates of June job growth were revised up to 46,000, more than double the 18,000 initially reported.

Sounds good. Under Obama's Administration?

We need about 90k jobs created each month just to keep up with population growth and keep unemployment rate unchanged...

The private sector cut 8.5 million jobs in 2008 and 2009!

Aside from Reagan's second term (1985-1989) you are getting an avg. of 2.25% job growth under 1 term of a Republican president (3.96% with Reagan's second term included).....We saw an avg. of 11% job growth under a 1 term avg. of Democrat presidents....Just Bush 1 and 2 you are talking about a quarter of 1 percent job growth avg. per year...PATHETIC!

It's bad but better than what we had. Remember this:

  • Total Employment Feb 2001: 132.5MM
  • Total Employment Jul 2003: 129.8MM (-2.6MM)

  • Total Employment Feb 2009: 132.8MM
  • Total Employment Jul 2011: 131.2MM (-1.6MM)

This gets better when you look at private vs. government jobs. Republicans will appreciate this. Talk about big government!

  • Total Private Employment Feb 2001: 111.6MM
  • Total Private Employment Jul 2003: 108.2MM (-3.3MM)

  • Total Govt Employment Feb 2001: 20.9MM
  • Total Govt Employment Jul 2003: 21.6MM (+0.7MM)

  • Total Private Employment Feb 2009: 110.2MM
  • Total Private Employment Jul 2011: 109.1MM (-1.1MM)

  • Total Govt Employment Feb 2009: 22.5MM
  • Total Govt Employment Jul 2011: 22.0MM (-0.5MM)

Big Government FTW! Well, only if it's Republican created Big Government.

LAY Off Letter Little wonder why this guy is boss. He is sharp! You can't be any fairer than this leader... Dear Employees: As the CEO of this organization, I have resigned myself to the fact that Barrack Obama is our President and that our taxes and government fees will increase in a BIG way. To compensate for these increases, our prices would have to increase by about 10%. But since we cannot increase our prices right now due to the dismal state of the economy, we will have to lay off sixty of our employees instead. This has really been bothering me since I believe we are family here and I didn't know how to choose who would have to go. So, this is what I did. I walked through our parking lots and found sixty 'Obama' bumper stickers on our employees' cars and have decided these folks will be the ones to let go. I can't think of a more fair way to approach this problem. They voted for change......I gave it to them. I will see the rest of you at the annual company picnic.

He could have waited until there were actual tax and fee increases rather than saying he expects tax and fee increases. Obama extended the Bush tax cuts remember, and he had to compromise on the debt deal, leaving out tax increases altogether. Add the fact that Obama is having to cut down the size of government as part of the deal.

Don't forget that Obama actually cut taxes - about half of the stimulus package that the right doesn't miss a chance to criticize was tax cuts. They hate tax cuts, you know? Then there's the payroll tax holiday still in effect this year. All tax cuts. Hundreds of billions of dollars worth of tax cuts - on top of the extension of the Bush tax cuts. And yet, there are no jobs. Why? Because tax cuts do not create jobs. The proof is in the pudding.

Yep. People can give their opinion all day long, yet it's the facts and the numbers that matter at the end of the day.
