Hey,

I received my EAD/ADVANCE PAROLE card today, Can i now get a social security number with just the card? If so i guess i can also get a drivers licence also?

any thoughts would be a great help

cheers

Yes,

you can get a SSN, as you need one in order to work, which is what you are allowed to do with your EAD.

Driver license law is state law, and we have 50 of those. In most cases the EAD is not sufficient. Again, it depends on the State you are in.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

I am so glad I read this.

I just got my EAD yesterday. I had tried to get my DL awhile ago but the lady at the counter said that I couldnt unless I had something from the government stating that I would be in the country for more than a year. I only had the I94 which is 90 days. So when I got my EAD, it has a 2 year validity date on it. I was prepared to spend my 4 or 5 hours at the DMV today.

For future reference, this is all they will accept.

To verify US Citizenship or lawful permanent residence, the applicant must present one of the following:

Certificate of Birth issued by appropriate U.S. State, Territory, or District of Columbia;

Department of State Certification of birth issued to U.S. Citizens born abroad (Form FS-240, DS-1350, or FS-545);

Certificate of U.S. Citizenship (Form N-560, N-561, N-645);

U.S. Dept. of Justice INS U.S. Citizenship Identification Card (Form I-197)

U.S. Dept. of Justice INS Identification Card for Resident Citizen of the U.S. (Form I-179)

U.S. Passport

Valid Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551); or

Passport or I-94 stamped "Approved I-551";

Passport or I-94 stamped "Processed for I-551"

or

Permit to Re-enter (Form I-327).

The EAD is Form I-766, and not on the list.

I dont know whether to be happy that I just got my 4 or 5 hours back for the day or sad that I still have to wait to get my DL here.

It all depends on each state as to what you need to get DL. Every state is different and even though it says you only need EAD most wont give it to you till GC. I am in GA and had to wait till GC was approved to get mine.

weird because in Georgia, where I have my DL, they gave me my DL when all I had was a F1 visa, an international drivers license, proof of residency and a ssn denial letter. It was not straight forward but I made it clear that I needed one for school etc. maybe I lucked out but I had a lot of persistence.
