History International recently ran a 2 part series "Land of the Tsars" Kind of a breif overview of Russia from Kievian Rus to 1917. You may be able to see it "on Demand"

I watched it and talked it over with a woman from the Far East and she said, "remember, these were Muscovites and that's like whole different country."

My wife was commenting on it last night. She was ranting on how they had to work hard in school for the privilege of working 10-hour days in the mosquito-infested fields picking potatoes for dedushka Lenin during summer break. "I was 10 years old and already I knew this was wrong. So horrible. Uzhes. But everybody must try so hard so you can be pioneer. If you have bad grades you event not deserve to wear red tie. You must try hard! - And, everyone must do this."

The most interesting thing for me about the video was the people felt most free in the absence of government. Or, at least during the restructuring of government when elections were "fair" and their vote actually mattered. By the end, and in more modern times, they seemed to mirror us quite a bit. "Our vote doesn't matter. It's predetermined who is going to win."
