I take it you have never purchased a gun from a dealer here in the US. If so, you would know about the US back ground checks and would have never made that post.

I take it you didn't listen to the broadcast.

Hint: Are state background checks now including phone calls to investigate any history of aggressive behavior? ;)

 do they send them for an assessment by a professional or does the guy working the counter at the store make the assessment?

If I remember the broadcast sufficiently, its in one of the licensing steps- they actually have to call references. Not perfect, I know. But I can definitely agree to the likelihood that it cuts down on some of the angrier types getting access to heat.

I would probably be labeled as too unstable.

Who cares?

From your internet persona, perhaps. From your real life record, who knows.

So the gun buyer list three references to call, and these references can choose to say anything over the phone that they wish eh?

Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

I agree, as I stated, its not a perfect system.

Maybe they can delay ownership a bit more by having more thorough investigations into people's psych issues. Would that concern you if it happened with you?

It's not only far from perfect...it's a fail is what it is. A gun buyer gives references so that some government worker can call said references and make a decision based on what said references said over the phone. Flawed, fail...where to begin... Swiss cheese doesn't have that many holes in it.

what, rely on hearsay and disregard due process? if there was a history of such, it would be with the police, wouldn't it?

As one of several steps in attaining the priviledge to own a firearm in Canada.

As I said, it shows you did not listen to the broadcast.

True that... I wouldn't rely solely on a personal information check that included as close to an honest assessment if you were a violent guy.

They should include actual psych evaluations to the licensing process in Canada and see if that makes a dent in their huge gun-fueled killing spree problem.

Is than an assumption or do you have some proof?

I keep hearing DOJ tout statistics about X number of guns kept out of the hands of bad guys because of the background check. What I never hear is the number of bad guys illegally possessing them who circumvented the background check system by other illegal means. My assumption is the Canadian system is alarmingly similar in that regard.

From your internet persona, perhaps. From your real life record, who knows.

Yes, because I'm very aggressive on the internet. You never know when I'm going to just break down and bust out ALL CAPS, #######!!!!!

My criminal record indicates nothing violent so I'd be good to go there. What gets me though is you'd have a whole bunch of people who got into a bar fight in college or a minor D/V with an old girlfriend be prohibited from owning firearms simply because they're "aggressive" people. That aint right.

In America, owning a firearm isn't a priviledge. As such, there shouldn't be steps in attaining one or hoops to jump through. You don't have to get a background check before going to church, do you?

There is no such thing as "minor" domestic violence. Any adult who lacks the self-restraint to not hit his/her girlfriend/boyfriend is an emotional retard and doesn't belong anywhere near a firearm.

WTH are you on? I got a DV for asking for my money. My buddy got a DV for flipping his ol lady off when he was in his truck on his way to work.

So please tell us again about your experience and education in regards to obtaining a DV in this country.

Dunno, slim. Thoughts rarely conform to the bipolar assumption/outright truth paradigm. As for how the criminals in Canada obtain their heat... the broadcast was fairly detailed in explaining the majority of criminally-obtained weapons come from the US.

As for what your personality is here online, well... you are prisoner to your own posts. Nothing much I can say to add to that with more conditionated words such as 'perhaps.' IMO some offenses that don't show a pattern of behavior are OK by me too. They shouldn't be used to exclude ownership. Frequent aggression on the other hand... is a pattern.

Its a priviledge in Canada. I knew someone would fall for that line.

But yes- we certainly are permitted to regulate access to firearms in the US. I think its not too much to ask to have in place a system that checks the psych state of a potential owner. You may think otherwise, but public safety will disagree with you on it most of the time.

Your opinion has no bearing on the law. But, thanks for playing.
