Should I use smaller words and shorter sentences? maybe then they will be real posts in your opinion.

Despite what some women may say, size does matter. However, regardless of the size words you use, I'll still disagree with them.

Real posts = relating in some way to the topic, not just weak insults.

I've said it before, I'm not going to repeat myself. However, if you had actually read the Heller decision, and understood it, you would know. I suspect you havent' and you don't.

Wrong on both counts.

Isn't it hard being wrong all day?

I'm not sure Slim, you tell me. Your ignorance of the 2nd amendment notwithstanding, shall we get back on topic?

Ignorance of the 2nd Amendment. That's funny!

Back to topic. Canada's crime is Canada's business.

Slim, thats not completely true. With the way that the U.S. and Canada (Mexico too) is situated, you get a lot of splash over crime that bleeds from the U.S.. Just look at Windsor Ontario for example.

Back to topic. Canada's crime is Canada's business.

That's not the topic. That may be what you want the topic to be.

Really, the topic is a comparative survey of two cities with many similarities yet shockingly different crime and homicide statistics.

Why does Chicago have so many murders than Toronto?

How could Chicago's murder rate be brought down to less shocking levels?

That is the topic.

Note that answers to these questions may or may not involve fewer guns, more guns, less restrictive gun control, more restrictive gun control, more cops, less cops ... that's all good material for discussion. This is not about making the US more like Canada. It's not about stripping the Constitution or denying America's values or system of justice. It's about a practical, street level issue. Hundreds of people in Chicago get murdered every single year. Thousands of people in America get murdered every year. Do you care about that? Do you want to do something about that? What would you do?

It is completely true. When crooks from Canada (or Mexico) come here we deal with them. We don't go crying to their home country and when our citizens cry about it they don't cry to the other country's government, they cry to ours.

Why does Chicago have so many murders than Toronto?

Because Chicago has more blacks and Latinos.

How could Chicago's murder rate be brought down to less shocking levels?

Relocate (or otherwise eliminate) the black and Latino residents of the city.

Hundreds of people in Chicago get murdered every single year. Thousands of people in America get murdered every year. Do you care about that?

Not at all. If they were people who were trying hard to make a nice life for themselves, then maybe I'd care a little. As of right now, if the parasites happen to feed on each other every now and then, that only lessens the burden the rest of us face.

Do you want to do something about that?

I think we should arm them all.

What would you do?

I'd immediately stop all welfare, food stamps, etc., release everyone who's in jail on a BS charge (like drugs, B&E, etc.) and arm everyone. Then I'd wait. The situation would probably sort itself out in a matter of a few months.

No, I guess I wasn't clear enough. However, I have actually learned my lesson, and not going to elaborate further, not like you'd read it.

'Portugal. The Man' loses all of its gear in Chicago theft

PORTUGAL. THE MAN: Group from Wasilla is hoping items show up at pawn, music shops.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Alaska-rooted rock band Portugal. The Man lost all of its equipment after its touring van and trailer were stolen from a Chicago parking lot this week, a publicist confirmed Tuesday.

The Oregonian reported that the band lost dozens of items including vintage guitars and amps, keyboards, effects pedals, drums and microphones. The band's Ford van and black trailer were taken Monday from an attended parking lot near Chicago's Grant Park.

The band performed the night before at the Lollapalooza music festival.

Lead singer John Gourley told the Oregonian that the band had only recently acquired all the equipment they needed to make the music they want and put on the live show their fans have come to expect.

"Basically every bit of money Portugal. The Man has made over the last five years was in that trailer," Gourley said.

The band last month released its sixth album and first for Atlantic, "In the Mountain in the Cloud."/

"We need to find this stuff," Gourley said, "because it's who we are and what we do at this point. It's the last three records, using those guitars and amps."

In an effort to raise awareness, the band took to Twitter and asked people to take a list of stolen items to local pawn and music shops.

Publicist Ashley White confirmed the theft in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Portugal. The Man hails originally from Wasilla, and its members now live in Portland, Ore.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Conrad Black?

Because Chicago has more blacks and Latinos.

But they weren't white so they should only count as 3/5 of a murder.

Relocate (or otherwise eliminate) the black and Latino residents of the city.

That way we'll only have to deal with John Wayne Gacy types.

Not at all. If they were people who were trying hard to make a nice life for themselves, then maybe I'd care a little. As of right now, if the parasites happen to feed on each other every now and then, that only lessens the burden the rest of us face.

You're planning on legalizing cannibalism?

I think we should arm them all.

More guns means less shootings, less people, too.

Slim, thank you for this post. Really, I mean it. This gets to the heart of the issue. You are being honest and forthright with your views. In your view, the murder statistics don't present a problem. There's nothing to be fixed. On the contrary, they "lessen the burden the rest of us face".

That is one view of how our society should function. Every man for himself, survival of the fittest, no heavy hand of the Law or Government to equalize us or regulate us. It's a view as old as the Republic, and I respect it.

There's another view: a view that no man is an island, that we are all in this together, that we are all better off when we are each better off and all worse off when we leave our weaker and less fortunate behind. This view is also as old as our Republic, and I respect it too.

In shorthand, we refer to these two views as 'conservative' and 'liberal'. They are neither right nor wrong, and certainly not absolute. Most of us feel somewhere in the middle, and on any given issue or given day, will feel a bit more one way or the other. Some of us are passionately at one extreme or the other of these views.

I, for one, do think it's unconscionable to have hundreds of murders in Chicago each year. I think it weakens the fabric of our society to ignore them and shrug them off. I'm a liberal. You can see why I look for policies that improve these grim statistics. I can see why you do not. Why should you? Why fix something you don't believe is even broken? I respect that. However, we live in a society together. It's good that we can hear each other out and listen to each others' point of view.

That's terribly egalitarian of you to say. We do need people like Slim to keep questioning the status quo and maintain a centrist policy on all issues. Le Chatelier's priniciple applies to social dynamics as well as societal norms. Having said that, Slim's analysis is a bit too pragmatic for this pollyanna. I do not subscribe to all aspects of his Hobbesian view of reality, it is not an utterly dystopian existence but it is far from perfect. Do murders warrant such attention? Far more people die in automobile accidents and of serious health problems than are shot or otherwise killed. So why then is the murder rate such an issue? In my estimation, it is the capricious nature combined with the preventabilty of such actions. Accidents happen but there is rarely some malicious intent behind them. The same can be said for a reckless lifestyle (in most instances). Murder, especially via firearm requires thought and this, then is why it is so heinous. Compared to, for example, bludgeoning, it requires less skill, less animosity, to despatch a victim. Coupled with the possibility of bystander injury, difficult with a knife or hammer, the truly random and preventable nature of gun violence engenders the most helpless feelings in all of us and that is why it is so much of a concern.

I think jail time is appropriate for breaking and entering. It's a pretty serious charge.

But I'd probably keep it between 93 days and 6 months...I knew a guy from high school that did 5 years straight out of high school on a home invasion charge (after violating probation)...

I'm sure there are countless examples of rapists, murderers, and bank robbers that did only 5 years upon conviction...Why did the guy I know get 5 years for a non violent offense (home invasion) that he committed in high school at 16 or 17 years old...

a non violent offense (home invasion)

I tend to think of home invasion as a violent offense, or at least potentially as one.

The image I have in my mind of this crime is the homeowners pistol whipped and bound and gagged while the perps are robbing the place. That seems pretty darn violent to me. Maybe that's not what your high school pal did, but if that's the basic concept of a home invasion, I'd say years of jail time seems appropriate.
