This is the response I got when I sent an email asking about my wife's visa after sending in her passsport a week ago Friday.

The Immigrant Visa section has either not received or has not processed the documents you recently mailed to us. Due to the large volume of mail that the Consulate receives, we are unable to immediately process such documents. After the documents have been reviewed, the beneficiary should receive visa and visa package by COD mail. If the beneficiary has not received visa and visa package after four weeks, we ask that the beneficiary or the petitioner contact us again.

It may be a while :sleepy:

Wow... It's taking foreverrr... I wonder if it would be faster if you physically delivers the passport to them. It took them a WEEK to post that they had received our Singapore police certificate. With your case, it'll probably take them a week to post that they received the passport and another week or two to ship out the visa... I would not be surprised if the whole process extends to a month.:(

I am not sure if physical delivery is still an option. I might send them an email and ask?

I think a month might happen plus first week of October is National Holiday so that is just going to cause more delay.

Anna,

I still maintain that it wouldn't hurt to appear in person if you have the time, especially when they ask for your husband's passport to issue the visa. You being the USC can go to the consulate for American Citizen Services and speak to an immigration officer.

I've done it and met USC's who were there for various issues with their fiancee's k-1 visas.

I would talk to the officer nicely and tell them you have waited a long time for your husband's visa to be issued, and you are delivering his passport personally to make sure it gets to the consulate, and you hope to have his passport back in a few days because you have to catch a flight back to the US on X date.

You need to give them a few days because they might still do a last minute name or facial recognition check with Washington DC before issuing the visa. That's what happened to a USC I met when I was in Guangzhou with my fiancee.

I wouldn't advice your husband or non-USC to deliver the passport because he may not get pass the guards. But any US citizen is free to go to the 5th floor of the consulate for help :)

Hi Bobby,

It has been a month since Guangzhou had the new documents. I thought I should send a checkup e-mail and this is their reply:

Thank you for the inquiry.

We have not yet received the Singapore police certificate.

Sincerely,

Immigrant Visa Unit

U.S. Consulate General Guangzhou

So now I am worried. After a month of waiting, they are telling me they have not received the Singapore police certificate???

The last thing I heard from them was our documents was received on Aug. 26th and now they are saying they haven't received it!!! WTH is going on?

I really want to appear in person and ask but I have to solve the issues I have with my school first. As of now, it doesn't look like I can take any time off from school. I won't know my schedule until the end of this week so I can't book any flights until then. I called DoS using the lingo Darnell provided but they still don't say much... This is really frustrating but there is really nothing I can do. If I am able to leave the US, I will definitely appear in person, ask them the question and possibly deliver my husband's passport.

Anna,

I understand how you feel. My k-1 petition wasn't without drama either :)

You're doing your best, and that's plenty. I know it's hard to just sit there and wait. I have some patience, but I also like to do something while waiting if I can. To my surprise, the consulate staff and Chinese guards were not as bad as I was led to believe. I went with a smile and they return with a smile. I stated my facts clearly, and they were willing to do what they can.

Since Guangzhou said they have not received your husband's Singapore police certificate, and if you decide to go to Guangzhou, you should deliver both your husband's police certificate and passport. Print out their email reply that says they received your husband's police certificate on August 26th. Be prepared to give them what they want. You, the USC can go to the American Citizen Services as often as you need to deliver any document if necessary. It doesn't hurt to try because no one can stop you IF you appear professionally, courteously and sincerely. Hold back your anger and frustration for now and go with a clear mind. I know you can do it :)

I'm not saying every appearance of US citizens solves all problems, but being there is to get as close as you can to the visa issuing authority to send a personal message or plea to the officer handling the case. Be nice when presenting all your facts and request an answer about your case and see if there is anything they can do to issue the visa while you're there. Again, be reasonable and give them a few days to process the case. If they need to wait for further background checks after receiving the police report, then there's not much we can do but wait. However, if it was just a matter of prying your case file from an officer's hand, then being there will yield some results. That's my personal opinion and experience in Guangzhou.

By the way, when calling DOS, you don't have to wait to listen to all the recording. Just press 0 for the operator after the initial English/Spanish selection as I recall.

Yes, don't worry I will follow your advice if I get a chance to go back to China. However, as of now, it looks unlikely that I would be able to go back. I want to! I really do! But if I go back, it would mean I will be taking A YEAR off from school because our classes are only offered once a year. If I weight the pros and cons of taking a year off from school versus waiting for a couple of more months, I would rather wait.

I have contacted Guangzhou again to see what is going on. I am hoping they received it and just not processed it yet.

Thanks for the DoS tip. I usually just press 1 and then 0 and it skipps everything.

what's yer pattern for emailing GUZ IV with the verbiage I've provided?

I have some sense that you've never gotten the right person at GUZ IV, and yer suffering from regular queue hold.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Anna,

I agree with you that you should stay in school and let this immigration matter run its course :)

We can air our concerns and emotions here, but we still have to take care of our jobs and schools.

Hope you'll hear from Guangzhou soon so that you and your husband can move on. :)
