DS-230 Question #35

Hello,

We are stuck on question 35 on form DS-230. It asks to list dates of all previous visits to the US. My wife is from Canada and by this time has probably crossed the border literally hundreds of times. We live about a half hour away from each other and we always spend the weekend in the US. To cross the border to visit for the weekend requires no Visa, only a passport.

Do we really need to list EVERY visit to the US she has ever done? If yes, how do we get that information so we're not making it up. It's impossible to remember how and when she's been here.

Thank you so much!

What point are you at in the process? :time:

As tripod alluded to, if you have to use the DS-260 (an online form), then you will probably not need to list all the dates of previous US visits. I say that because I went and looked at screenshots of the DS-260 and all it asks regarding previous US visits are:

Have you ever visited?

Have you ever been issued a visa?

Have you ever been refused admission, refused a visa, or withdrawn application for admission?

I had to use a DS-230 and a DS-156. Both forms wanted, in slightly different formats, a list of all trips to the US. What I, and many others, have done is simply list every trip you can remember or have documentation for, and then include a line item of "Numerous trips to the US between <year> and <year>, all less than 48 hours." Because Canadians can enter the US visa-free [and until 2009, passport-free!] and even now do not typically get their passports stamped if it's at a land crossing, the US consulates in Canada know it's fairly normal for Canadians to have made many day or weekend trips to the US over a typical lifetime that have little or no extant documentation.

DON'T PANIC

"It says wonderful things about the two countries [Canada and the US] that neither one feels itself being inundated by each other's immigrants."

-Douglas Coupland

I listed the big ones, like to Hawaii and my first couple of trips to visit hubby. I had crossed numerous times growing up so just put from date A to date B numerous crossings. They accepted it.

Please be aware that if you're applying for an IR-1/CR-1 visa and are in Canada, you're REQUIRED to submit the DS-260 online. And the DS-260 only asks for the last FIVE visits. So as long as you have those last 5 dates, then you're fine :)

What I suggest is to complete the top two available lines with the information about the latest two visits. On the third line type or print the following. Multiple visits since 19XX. No overstays. The year entered should be the year of first visit to USA. If not sure, add the word "about" before the year. Works every time I've seen it tried.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...
