don't forget a hypothetical cost of having your spouse wrecking a bunch of cars because he/she isn't an experienced 'defensive driver' on US freeways yet.

Also possible cost of being sued thru legal system if and when you're held liable for above.

(note: my mother has driven for 70 years, a few years ago someone ran a stop sign and hit her car, yet they got witnesses and argued in court that it was her fault even though the other party got the ticket for failure to yield. Also insurance company was very, very slow to pay the $500 deductible).

All sorts of nightmare scenarios come to mind which drawfs the initial cost of bringing over fiance(e), making the original K1 cost as the least of my worries.

If money is there, you might even want to consider keeping a lawyer on retainer for a few years just to be a little more safer.

And also the cost of not being able to work for months and months once you get to the US! Oh yes, me thinks you have to be very rich to go through this whole process!

I don't want to sound a bit like a synical old fool here, but I guess that I'm only starting to realise how much all of this K1 visa thing is costing!

Original I-129f application = $150-$200 (can't remember exactly)

Medical for K1 visa = $170

visa at embassy = $ 60

waiver (I-601) that I had to file = $ 250

now I find out that the I-485 form AND biometrics are gonna cost $ 250 (or thereabouts)

So it's looking at nearly $1000 so far, that's a heck of a lot of money for the US DHS eh??? Somone's living in the lap of luxury over there!

Are you complaining or informing us?

How much would you spend to date someone here in the US for a couple years before getting married? Probably a lot more.

So basically, you're saying that it's just much cheaper to marry and bring foreigners over, than date and marry someone here already.

I'd rather date someone already here for a while, regardless of the money spent, than take a chance and marry someone from overseas w/o barely knowing him/her.

Just take a look at Nate's post, with that gal from Vietnam. Big mistake! Costly; perhaps?

You missed the point entirely. A statement was made concerning the costs....I simply restated it from another angle.
