I thought it is done automatically, on the DS 230 form it asks whether you need a SSN assigned so I thought it is taken care but you can always check at the SSN office to see if they already have one assigned for you.

Not everyone checks the box, and even if you did, sometimes it takes a very long time to get the number, so going to the SS office is always the better choice if there is one near you.

Like I said earlier, not everyone checks the box, and even if you did, the SS number doesn't always show up, so going to the SS office will get you a number very quickly.

^ Agree.

I went to our local office three weeks to the day after my POE. I submitted the completed application ( SSN application), my passport with visa stamp and I was also asked to show my birth certificate. I had my card in 6 days.
