Back in the US after 3 years in Germany

Our family has recently returned to the US after we had been stationed in Germany for 3 years due to my husband being in the Air Force.

I removed my conditional status on my greencard while I was back home without any problems but until our return in June, I had never used my greencard to travel, not even the conditional card which I had recieved only weeks before we moved overseas.

So, I was a little nervous when we approached Immigration at the Airport.

To my delight, Chicago has a "returning military/LPR line" which we went to, no waiting time. My husband was greeted with a friendly smile, he showed his and our sons US passports and his orders, sending him back to the US.

Then it was my turn, I showed my passport and my greencard. The officer looked through it, just to find no entry stamp at all (I had my passport renewed in my married name while we were in Germany). He checked my husbands military orders again to check if I was on there and then went back to my passport and greencard. Then he asked me if I was seriously out of country for 3 years without returning which I had to answer yes. He gave me a look with raised eyebrows and a look that said "What were you thinking?" So I added I only left due to my husbands orders and that I had the set of orders that led us TO Germany as well and if he wanted to see them.

He looked at my husband and then said "No, Ma'am, it's ok. Welcome back to the United States."

Customs wasn't a problem at all, so I made it through without major hassle. I have to admit though, as long as I am "only" a LPR, I will always be nervous entering the US....

You can be a US citizen before we celebrate the imaginary 2011th birthday of Jesus Christ, our Lord and savior.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

I know, JustBob! I will get started with the whole process (BBG first!) as soon as our current living situation has calmed down.

We haven't even gotten to our next duty station, we are still stuck in a hotel, then I'll have the baby and then hopefully the military will give us the "go" to move.

I am not in a big rush as I am not planning to travel anytime soon, but sooner rather than later I want to get the whole process started.

I mean, it's not like the greencard doesn't mean anything..:)
