Ok to all those people who INSIST "I would do that kind of work...any work if I had the chance; we don't need illegals..."

Get thee to Idaho and pick them potatoes!!!! Are you there yet??

:lol::lol::lol:

Thank goodness I have a decent job. I'd say picking potatoes pretty much sucks!

Ok, serious question.

How much would a potato picking job in rural Idaho have to pay for you to move out there and work at it for 1 year?

2x your current annual earnings?

3x your current annual earnings?

4x your current annual earnings?

5x your current annual earnings?

6x your current annual earnings?

10x your current annual earnings?

20x your current annual earnings?

100x your current annual earnings?

1000x your current annual earnings?

Or more?

Or no amount of money could get you to relocate to rural Idaho to pick potatoes?

Can I answer this one? It is my opinion that a potato farm in Idaho would not be able to pay any of those options above, so there would never be a question...however, if I was offered probably 3x what I'm making now, I might consider giving it a shot...that would be a really really really nice living though (money-wise).

Don't let the sunshine spoil your rain...just stand up and COMPLAIN!

keep in mind, it is seasonal work. not familiar with potatoe harvesting season(s) in Idahoe, or anywhere for that matter, but let's say it is 3 months of work. work 3 months for my current annual pay? hmmmm very intersting.

Feasible?

Ok. How much more than what you make now (in terms of hourly pay rate) would they have to pay you to go work for them for 3 months? Bear in mind, it is a temporary job and you'd have to live in rural Idaho. This means probably quitting the permanent job you have right now and moving.

How much more?

That's a good question. Considering I am not much on manual labor, I'd have to say it would probably be the no amount of money option. But, if I were in a situation where I had to do it, I would say 3x my current salary would be good. But that would make potatoes way out of range for normal people to buy.

I need to add that I would also probably be fired halfway through the first day...I seriously doubt I could handle that kind of work, and that's just me being honest.

I have to jump on the band wagon here. I wouldn't last a day in the potato fields. The first spider that appeared would send me screaming for the house.

I swore I'd never live east of California. Idaho is not only east of California, bway to the north. I'd have to pass. Especially for hourly work for only a couple of months. If had to return to working on the farms, I'd stick around here in California. At least it is decent weather. :P

Were there a farmer here who would be willing to hire me, I would pick those potatoes until I found a better job.

So the only thing keeping you back is the fact that it's in Idaho.

I bet a lot of American workers would be willing to work in a potato farm but a small % of them would be willing to actually go live in idaho.

maybe time to pay more for potatoes........which is not a bad idea

The article seems to suggest that the native workforce is tied up in the construction biz. Construction pays good money. Better than potato farms, anyhow. Now if the farms paid more and lured the construction workforce back into agro, won't it be the construction biz whining about not having enough people to work?

If the article is accurate (and I'm not saying it is), then doesn't it sound like there is a shortage of labor that can only be solved by increasing the size of the workforce?

Makes sense, those unemployment rates are incredibly low (3.3% for Idaho and 2.3% for the Eastern potato region).

I couldn't handle either one. I'm what some people would call a spoiled brat. Never had to deal with those sort of things and hopefully never will. I'm sure if it came down to it and I was trying to provide for my family, I would do it. That's why I said, thank goodness I have a decent job. I am very happy to admit I'm not cut out for that type of work.
