Getting sick from new enviroment

It is pretty common that people get sick once they change their environment because they may meet some new bugs as well. I was sick twice in the first two months. I got some kind of a stomach bug from a little baby and then I caught something respiratory. That was pretty much it. Considering humidity, which is a trademark of this area (Kansas), I still hate it but am getting better (been here for almost 3 years).

I should add as well, that I was also lucky in the UK never to get bitten by much, even the midgies in Scotland used to leave me well alone.

When I first started to come to Fl, it was incredible, I would be bitten all over.

Now I am here 18 months-ish, it's calmed down a lot, I don't blow up like I used to, but I do get bitten often. Taking care to use bug spray, having Terminix come out often to get rid of anything nefarious, and spraying the yard down every week religiously, and it's somewhat tolerable to be outside.

I don't know that prescriptions are more expensive here then in Canada...it's just that you may not have realized how much they cost when your previous health insurance paid for them ;)

The prescriptions were the inhalers. The one, I was paying about $92 for, here I paid $177, the other, the basic ventilin, I was paying $16 in Canada, here its $45. Thats a pretty drastic difference. My husband told me though, that I should go to Walmart to have them filled, that I would find a big price difference if I did. So mayby its not more expensive, maybe its just that pharmacy and Im still learning. :)

Good luck getting acclimated. My fiance moved to Southern Texas from Northern Wisconsin a year ago and it's been hard for him. Now he can cope with the heat better and he doesn't get ill as much but it's still very hard to adjust.

Yeah, prescription drugs are generally more expensive here. Try to get generics as much as possible. I would probably go to Costco for my prescriptions if I ever needed them since I'm already a member.

Just to clarify, I don't believe any public health insurance plans in Canada's provinces covered prescription drugs. I know for a fact that Ontario's does not. Some employers do offer supplemental medical insurance that covers them for participating employees.

The Dallas area is one of the worst places for allergies. My husband has been having problems with the heat this summer. He's from northern Germany. I hope you get to feeling better soon.

For prescriptions, make sure you check the $4 generics Kroger. Some other places have similar things. I know Market Street has a similar program too. Here's the list from Kroger...http://www.kroger.com/SiteCollectionDocuments/pharmacy/printable_4_dollar_drug_list_2011.pdf

My doctor has been good about prescribing one of those if it's available. There's one time I asked if something was on the $4 generic list when he asked which pharmacy the prescription should go to.

The first night I was in Jacksonville, FL I woke up with grueling stomach cramps, but fell back asleep. Woke up shortly later and rushed to the bathroom and promptly puked my guts out. Felt like ####### for the next couple days but shortly after acclimated. It could be any number of things, really. Our bodies get used to our normal environments, and just like with jet lag, it takes time to adjust. I personally have a huge sensitivity to cold when I'm in bed, and I was in an apartment with the AC blasting (I had never lived in a place with AC before that!). I figured the combination of travel + new environment + cold really upset my stomach.

Get lots of sleep, boost your immune system, and spend some time in parks/country/green areas to help your body out with some cleaner air :)
