legal fees for h1b processing

I was hired by a presigious hospital and I am surprised I was told that the H1b visa will be handled using an external attorney- they do not have one on site. Also they will have no problem in paying the fraud fee and the petition fee but I might have to support the legal fee. Is that legal? Can I pay the attorney myself?

Most employers use an outside immigration attorney to apply for the H1-b visa. Most corporate employers including hospitals do not have immigration lawyers employed in their organizations.

Yes, it's legal for them to ask you to pay for some of the fees.

Whether you can pay the lawyer directly will be decided by the lawyer and the hospital. The hospital is the lawyer's client; not you. Even if you pay, you may be asked to sign a document that you understand the lawyer does not represent you as a client. This is to avoid any conflict of interest if you and the hospital have a disagreement which makes it impossible to represent you both as clients.
