DCF vs K-1 at Paris embassy

Hey VJ,

I faxed the US Consulate in Paris to ask about my fiance's packet 3 and interview date. The embassy called my fiance. (Wow, didn't see that one coming). Told him to tell me not to worry that it had been sent. She asked him why didn't we file as a married couple directly with the embassy. She said that the process is quicker than a K1 and that we would have already been together. She said that only one person of the couple had to live in France.

I thought that both of us had to be living in France in order to use direct consular filing. When this whole IMBRA stuff happened, it didn't even occur to me to go get married in Paris and file DCF there.

Well, just spreading some knowledge. I will post this in the K-1 forum as well. I know that every consulate is different and even different people at the same consulate contradict each other.

Could you "go get married in Paris" or would you have had to move to Paris/France, i.e. establish legal residency there?

We only briefly considered a DCF but thinking a change of residency would be required, knew I could not.

Paris does not require USC residency to file I-130 with them.

Bogota discontinued non-resident DCF a few years ago.

No I would not have had to move to Paris. I could have gotten married there and filed the DCF paperwork and returned to the USA. This is based on what they told my fiance on the phone.
