Bush's security stuns Indians

The Indian security establishment is having a harrowing time providing support to the American personnel responsible for United States President George W Bush's security in India.

The Americans make their own arrangements wherever their president travels.

They have a simple dictum: Trust no one.

They transfer tons of equipment, almost-science-fiction technology and highly trained manpower to protect the most powerful man in the world.

President Bush arrives on March 1. And yet, as of now, plans of his visit are almost a secret.

Massive security arrangements are being made, keeping in view the threat from Osama bin Laden's terror network.

Even though you would naturally expect the security concerns, the sheer scale, sophistication and budget of it boggles the mind.

Besides Air Force One -- in which the President travels -- more than a dozen aircraft will arrive in New Delhi from the US and different parts of world.

More than 700 personnel -- including American security forces -- are being flown in. Some with Bush, and some even from other countries.

Three presidential helicopters -– which are equipped with cutting edge landing systems that help them operate in near zero visibility -– have been flown in by cargo carriers in a disassembled state. They are being put together piece by piece.

Indian security officials were stunned to see the packaging and the sophisticated transportation of the helicopters.

The kind of communication equipment being brought to fit into Bush's vehicle would not look out of place in a Star Wars film.

A special window is being set up at Delhi airport to clear American equipment for the Bush visit. Special permissions are being given for the huge quantities of arms and ammunition being flown in by the American 'advance teams.'

Bush has about eight official engagements scheduled in India. And eight special teams have been constituted to protect Bush -– one for each programme.

A closely guarded strategy is being worked out for the landing of the President's aircraft.

A full security drill is likely to take place at the Palam Air Force Base after February 27.

On Monday, February 20, at about 10 am, two senior US embassy security officials visited the Central Hall of the Parliament carrying a sketch of the security arrangements made for Bill Clinton when he addressed a joint session six years ago.

Paul and I met on the Bazaar on the 14th January (he joined my progressive rock forum that day)

July 3rd he flew to England to meet me

We fell in love while he drove all over the place coz I cannot read maps (we were supposed to go to Ingleton - but touched Darlington 4 times, Pierce Bridge 6 times, Scotch Corner twice and Bernard Castle twice and we never did make it to Ingleton)

It has been so long and so much has happened in between...

Arrived in Houston on October 29th 2006

Married 17th November 2006

Lost my father 8th January 2007 (all dates are a blur after this)

i remember in the 80's, i'd say the second or third grade - when george senior was vp under reagan - he came to visit our school, which was on the us consulate grounds. this was shortly after the bombing of the barracks in beruit - security was at an all time high.

we had marines, secret service, metal detectors, the entire works that day at school.......what really made us laugh is they replaced the lawn and maintenance crew with their own crew - which were probably secret service agents, 'pretending' to rake leaves - yet had earpieces and were all WHITE - as opposed to the third world workers we were used to - such as pakistani's, indians, bengalis and phillipinos. they really weren't doing a good job passing themselves off as the groundskeeping force - stuck out like a sore thumb......couldn't even fool us elementary school kids!

That's not surprising at all. Shortly after Indira Gandhi was assassinated, the new PM (her son) visited a town in northern India I was visiting at the time. Indian security forces "comandeered" every home on both sides of the main road and put snipers on every roof. Of course, in true desi style, none of the people who's homes were taken away from them for a day were compensated or accomodated in any way :)

I must agree on this one. Outside Cashmere (Kashmir), American security is still better than Indian security.

Sometimes I think I know everything, and I regain consciousness. Seen it all, done it all, forgot most of it....

So much plenitude, yet so much emptiness

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).
