P3 items (Montreal)

Normally I consider myself a fairly intelligent woman, but, wow, when I try to get my head around all the paperwork and evidence required for the K1... I feel like my brain fell out! Here's hoping my wonderful fellow Canadian VJers can help.

Alright, I'm looking at the P3 list on the Montreal web site. My fiance is coming up here to visit next month and he wants to be able to bring as many of the originals as possible that I will need for the interview. (Yeah, we haven't even sent off the 129F yet... we're a little eager...)

First question. The checklist says an original and copy of each document for each "applicant". Am I, as the Canadian fiancee, the "applicant"?

ie, do I only need my own birth cert. and divorce cert, or do I need those of my USC fiance as well?

Also, I have 2 children who will be going through for K2s. Would they be considered "applicants" too? I'll bring their birth certificates for sure, but do I actually need 3 copies of every document, since there are 3 of us? I'm so confused.

Also, in the list is "Marriage certificate" -- I am divorced, as is my fiance. Do we need copies of our previous marriage certificates to go along with the divorce certificates? I'm thinking maybe the marriage certificate applies more to people on the K3 visa but who knows... Did I mention I'm confused?!

Thanks in advance for any clarification you can provide.

The K-1 Visa journey for myself and my two K-2 children:

K-1: NOA1 2011-8-10; NOA2 2012-1-12; Interview 2012-4-24; Visa issued 2012-9-17; POE (Sarnia) 2012-9-26; Wedding! 2012-10-02
AOS: NOA1 2012-11-20; Biometrics 2012-12-14; AP/EAD approved 2013-1-11; Interview 2013-1-31; 2-yr Green cards in hand 2013-2-9 (101 days total)

ROC: NOA1 11-7-14; Biometrics 12-1-14; 10-yr Green cards ordered 4-13-15! (157 days total)

Counting down to naturalization time!

Original birth cert and divorce decree of my USC husband was required at my k-1 interview in Canada.

Original marriage certificate is needed from K-1 female applicants when they have had a previous marriage because of name changes.

Whew, I'm sure glad I just got my birth cert in the mail. It certainly isn't clear from the checklist whose they want.

No its not, I felt like a mess at my interview but I brought everything I could possibly bring because of their crappy instructions! I even brought a copy of his previous marriage certificate just in case but because hes male they didn't need it unless he had changed his last name to hers lol

Don't send ANY originals with the I129f application! You will bring the originals of everything with you to your interview at the consulate. I didn't send a marriage certificate for a previous marriage however I will take it with me to the interview, just in case. They never asked for it and our application has passed the noa1 and noa2 stages, on it's way to the consulate now. In the information about what to bring to the interview there is no mention of marriage certificates at all but better safe than sorry.

The instructions about what to send with the 129f are pretty clear. Send what they ask for and remember it's Very important to send (copies of) certified copies of your certificates of divorce and sufficient proof of having met in person in the last two years.

It's the U.S. citizen who is the applicant at this stage. You become the applicant after the noa1 and noa2 are approved. He must provide a copy of his birth certificate and his passport. You need your long form BC for the interview not to send now. There is a ton of helpful information from other VJers so as you go through each step in this process you will have a lot of help and great information to guide you.

Good luck!

P.S. The pkt 3 and pkt 4 information comes later in the process and is sent to you from the consulate prior to your interview.

Did you read the check list? marriage certificates is MOST DEFINITELY on the list.... http://montreal.usconsulate.gov/content/visas/pdfs/visa_checklist.pdf

The only part that they do not make clear is that its females with prior marriages that need them because of name change due to marriage.

My mistake, my apologies to you OP! I read that to apply to CR1 filers. :bonk:

I appreciate you catching that before I inadvertently mislead anyone!!! :(

Montreal requested my USC husbands original birth cert and a copy. They look at both and kept the copy an gave me back the original. Same for all his other documents.

I wonder why they don't list these things on the checklist if they request them at the interview :/ I thought I was good to go but now I have to get more stuff from my fiance just to be safe. It makes me a little antsy since it could get lost in the mail (although that's unlikely since we're using FedEx). They hate making copys for you. Always make copys of your originals lol. The woman gave me a pretty nasty stink-eye when I couldn't find a copy of one of my originals. She said she would make ONE copy for me and if im missing any other copys that she will tell me to go out of the consul to a drug store and get copys made.. thank god i was only missing a copy of one original.

Spousal visas want originals at NVC stage.

K-1 visa want originals at interview stage.

Does anyone happen to know the purpose of showing the USC's birth certificate? My USC fiance was born in Europe but went thru immigration/citizenship in the US as an adult. I wonder if his birth certificate is really what they'll want or if I will need his passport and/or citizenship papers of some sort.

Things that make you go "hrm..."

Verifying the documents submitted at the beginning of the application are true and valid and not fakes. Because only copys of documents are submitted for the I-129F petition.
