Hello VJ,

I've been reading conflicting NVC steps on VJ and other websites. So I'd like to hear from those who've undergone the NVC process or those who know about this. Thank you.

When you file your DS-230, does the petitioner (USC) need to send in his birth certificate to the NVC?

I am worried about this particular problem because I (the petitioner) don't have the original nor a certified birth certificate. Will this be needed later on down the road, i.e., consular interview?

Thank you all,

Thanks A&M; but I am having trouble understanding what you're trying to say.

I filed I-130 for IR-1/CR-1 (spouse of US citizen). Do I need to send my original/certified birth certificate to NVC during the DS-230 stage? Thanks.

sorry :)

You sent a copy of your birth cert or a copy of your passport bio page during I-130, right?

Then you are fine.

All docs during DS-230 are from the beneficiary, not the US petitioner.

from beneficiary:

Original documents, photocopies, and translations (if required, as explained above) of the following documents must be submitted to the NVC for you and each family member immigrating with you to the United States.

Birth Certificates

Court and Prison Records

Deportation Documentation

Marriage Certificates

Marriage Termination Documentation

Military Records

Petitioner Documents

Photocopy of Valid Passport Biographic Data Page

Photographs

Police Certificates

Adoption Documentation

Okay. Thanks for the clarification A&M. So I don't need to send in my birth cert to the NVC, because I lost it. But I did send in my citizenship cert and passport stuff during the I-130 stage. Thank you!

Thank you all,

If you're filing an IR-1/CR-1 visa, then no, the petitioner's birth certificate isn't needed with the DS-230, only the beneficiary's.

Despite this, I'd highly suggest getting a certified copy of your birth certificate in case you ever need it in the future, not for immigration per se.

Yah. I was just thinking about that, too. But I did loose my original birth cert; and I was born abroad.

Thanks.

I don't know what country you're from, but in Canada, you don't need your original birth certificate to get a certified copy.
