Kathryn, you mad spelunker, you! I had no idea. laughing.giflaughing.giflaughing.gif

Yep - There's a lot of things people don't know about me! :D

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Nah - nothing that would interest them. They already know about my being charged for windsurfing without a life jacket! But let's not derail this thread anymore - back to 'must see touristy places' between Waterloo, Ontario and Branson, Missouri!

Bluespring Caverns looks like a must see, if it's open when I go down. Honey actually wants to drive through Buffalo he says, was really looking forward to watching a hockey game! Man after my own heart!

If you like caves, you should check out Mystic Cavern in Arkansas. It's on my list of to do's, and looks gorgeous! http://www.mysticcaverns.com/

Pelee Island Winery is really nice. They have huge grounds you are allowed to tour, and offer a nice wine tasting tour. I prefer them to the Niagara wines. My favourite local winery is a little further north in Kingsville, it's called Mastronardi's. Yum! Also, Missouri has a really nice wine that I can't get here in Canada. They've never even heard of the grape at the LCBO, lol, so it's gotta be a local thing. It's called Stone Hill Winery, and they have a wine made from a Norton grape, which is native to the Midwest. Why it's not more popular amongst wine snobs is beyond me. I already plan on buying a few cases for my wedding when I get there. Also have to figure out what the limit is on wine I can bring across the border as personal effects, otherwise I'd better start drinking, I have a cellar to empty!

Great! Now I can't stop thinking about Mammoth Cave for some reason. Mom would kill me if I forgot to mention The Brickyard and all the racing stuff there as well as her alma mater, IU in Bloomington. The Amish have a big community in Nappanee, which might be out of the way, depending on the route taken.

My favourite winery is actually Chateau des Charmes in the Niagara Region, but I know what you mean about local wineries. We visited the Habersham winery here in Georgia and they had several wonderful wines made with a local grape I had never heard of before but are really popular here - Muscadines. They are great as an eating grape as well. We ended up buying a case, which reminds me, we are down to our last bottle so will need to get some more. I've had Mastronardi's wines as well as I used to live in Chatham, and Kingsville and Leamington were in our Federal Riding when I worked for the Member of Parliament. We always tried to serve local products at any of the events we sponsored. They produced some great wines  . I ended up giving away my wines to friends before I moved - and again, wish now that I hadn't but c'est la vie.

I can see why Mystic Caves is on your must see list - they look great! I actually haven't been to Arkansas yet - still on my to visit list :) .

We'll drive through St Louis down to Springfield before we hit Branson. I've been to Mark Twain National Forest before, it's beautiful there. I also have the option of hitting other Springfield's along the route it seems, which one is home to The Simpsons??

Indiana Beach, Indiana

Rides

A few years back I spent a day at both Cedar Point (major resort)

and at a little place called Indiana Beach. The CP coasters were

great, but the IB experience was priceless in a different way -

an old retro resort that brought back the feeling of the 50's and

to ride their old coaster at night was an experience not to be missed.

I love that Amusement park a lot. It is the premier park for roller coasters. A must for any that love riding. Also you can go to Cleveland and see the Rock and Roll museum. You will have to go through St. Louis so you can do the Brewery tour and see the Arch. It is also a good place to stock up on ammo for the remaining trip to Branson. Make sure to lock the doors and be sure to top the tanks up. If you must stop somewhere don't make eye contact and mispronounce words to be understood. Once in Branson you should be safe but don't venture too far from the safety perimeter.
