No, This is where you ask yourself is it really worth it or not. You have already spent thousands of dollars on getting your loved one here. This 200$ charge is really the straw that broke the camels back. If it was me, I would let the 1996 Truck be deported. I mean how much love can you really give. Makes me wonder now is Chevy truely American, or did we help bail out a foregin entity.

If I was you I would write to Daniel Ammann (CEO of Chevy), for his support or send him your bill. If that did does nto work, I would appeal to the US goverments on the how much of the truck was built and assembled here. If it is more than 65% , I would say its American.

Lastly, Shouldnt we as America just annex Canadato be part of the US. It should be very easy since there is not real army. I know we will have to do something with the French speakers, maybe resettle them in New Orleans.

But lastly and truely, I would just spend the 200$ for the letter and chauk it up another expense for my loved one being here.

Wishing you the Best and hoping to shed some humor and bad spelling and grammer, for all the Kids that cannot read good.

Please tell the families of the many Canadian soldiers who have lost their lives fighting in wars in places like Afghanastan and on peacekeeping mission around the world that their sons/daughters/husband/wives/brothers/sisters were not part of a real army.

Your comment was rude and uncalled for.

ouch - did a search at the Manassas Chevrolet - they don't let you search below 1999....gotta be cheaper to figure out how to make the import work.

Yeah, I know we can make the import work. I just want to make sure we do it in a way so that Jenni won't have any issues at the POE. I'm surprised that nobody here has had to import a 1996-1997 GM vehicle none of which are EPA compliant. At least with the truck it's just a matter of reprogramming the computer. Others have to make additional modifications.

You realize, of course, that the British doing exactly that after they captured Nova Scotia from France in ~1760 is why New Orleans is so French in the first place! :D:lol:

Just to follow up on the import of Jenni's 1996 Silverado...

It turns out that the CBP at Buffalo didn't ask about the truck and trailer that Jenni was driving across the border at POE on Oct 16 and it didn't get "imported" at that time. So I found the nearest CBP at Dulles airport and asked them if they could process the vehicles for import and they said they could. Well we finally got around to getting them imported and there were no issues after we showed the officer the compliance letter and the emissions reprogramming paper work that was done to make the truck compliant with EPA. We had brought the GM service bulletin and a signed form from the GM dealer that did the work.

The officer made us look up tariff codes for the vehicles and we had to remind him that there should be no duty and he had to get confirmation for that, but it all worked out.

When we had the truck retrofitted we had brought the service bulletin and the form for them to sign and it's a good thing we did because the dealer was clueless. Found it online here.

The good news is that Jenni's truck and trailer are both now imported successfully and titled and registered and inspected with Virginia plates. woohoo!!!

I think we ended up spending $700 to get her truck imported, but that still beats a new car payment.
