Social Security In Michigan

Just a quick FYI that Michigan, so far, has been good to us!

Paul applied for his Social Security card two weeks after he arrived and received it in the mail a week and a half later. They were very friendly and gave him no trouble. The woman looked in the computer and said you do have a 90 day work permit but when that runs out you'll need the EAD - she was right on top of everything. He's looked into the DMV and, though I make no promises, as we understand it he can take his UK license and get a US one for $25. He believes they may even waive the written and driving test - we'll have more information soon. He's been driving my car so far as Michigan allows him to drive on his UK license and my insurance policy covers him as a driver as long as I've given the OK for him to drive it.

Our bank was nice enough to open up a joint account for us before Paul got here so he had some place to transfer his funds with his name on it and they gave him a debit/credit card right away.

We applied for our marriage license on Tuesday, without Paul's Social Security number (it arrived Thursday) and we were given no trouble again.

So far, the Michigan offices and 'officials' we've dealt with have been wonderful. Just an FYI for anyone else (Liza, JenT, Iceyspots and others) who live here in Michigan. I was so stressed about all of it and now that it's gone well I wanted to reassure anyone I could.

Good luck!

And so he did what countless punk-rock songs had told him to do so many times before: he lived his life

10/07/2006 WEDDING DAY!

11/14/2006 AOS packet made it to 'the box' after being overnighted.

12/02/2006 Paul had biometrics

12/14/2006 AOS Forwarded to CSC AND AP Application approved.

01/17/2007 First touch of 2007 at CSC

01/20/2007 Touched AGAIN (also the 18th) come on...

February: Oops, RFE for a REGISTERED marriage certificate. Oops! Overnighted it.

02/28/2007 Paul gets email letting us know his GREENCARD is on it's way! It's done...for now!

03/09/2007 Paul's greencard arrives. And breathe...

We began with mailing the I-129 in on February 27, 2006 so the whole process took us approx. one year.

Good luck out there!

Hi!

Just a quick addition to the above - When I first went into the SS office and asked to apply for a card, the clerk began to say "I don't think K1 is work authorised, do you have an EAD?” Straight away I brought out the printout of the "SSN K1 Authorisation" from the downloads page here: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...page=otherforms

and explained about the 90 days work authorisation. At this point she checked my I-94 number with the computer and found I did indeed have the work authorisation and then signed my application form to issue the card. All I took with me were my passport (with I-94 of course), SS-5 application form and the document I linked to earlier.

Best of luck to anybody else applying - it was very straightforward for me!

Paul
