Good reading on Captain Ewok saying they don't know how to do the programming (vs not wanting to do it period.)

There does not see to be a way to enable for the forums and disable for PM. Can you let me know where that setting is?

It does seem to be a system-wide setting, which kind of blows my mind. Don't blame the Captain: it's the software, as far as I can tell.

The filter does seem to be pretty Puritan, though, IMO

Blame the captain. He's trying to sell personal financial gain as community values.

If you know of code that can tell the contextual difference between a word being used badly or good (for words that can be either) let me know. Send me a link to the code / plugin module. The built in code to the SW is what we are using. Contextual filtering of bad words is extremely difficult in an automated way.

Maybe just consider getting a different language pack for your censor. Basically, if the word is allowed on basic cable, it's completely ridiculous that it's not allowed on a site where the percentage of people under 18 is basically nil--I've seriously seen perhaps 5-10 16 year olds in my time here out of thousands of users. The ex-vice president's name, for example, is allowed on shows that are aimed at the teen crowd (Supernatural, among others). There are a ridiculous number of words that are banned on this forum that I literally have not seen banned even when I've moderated or worked on forums for teens. The closest thing I've seen to the ridiculous level of censorship on VJ is the strictest setting of the USER-SELECTED language filter on Gaiaonline, a forum for teens and youths. And when I say user-selected, I mean that the user can select from a set of 'strictnesses' on their profile settings.

There's a point at which you lose family friendliness by treating adults like children and, frankly, the VJ language filter crosses it.

Said this before. It also makes it near impossible to enforce supposedly unacceptable language in a way that is consistent or which has the appearance of being fair and transparent. Edited by Venkman

Yes. Exactly. I mean, we have a situation where moderators literally sit as regular users and participate in conversations where someone is called a Mr. Cheney in increasingly creative ways and that legitimizes the calling of someone a Mr. Cheney, but when someone gets what I have always called 'butthurt' and complains about that, then it's dozens of posts removed (even if most of the post was legitimate discussion with a single line calling someone a Mr. Cheney) and thread bans threatened--even whilst said moderators have participated in the Mr. Cheney calling.

It's really sad to see censorship at this level. It means that moderators are busy being called to issues where someone is being called a Mr. Cheney and not to actual issues that require nuanced moderation. It contributes to family UNfriendliness, if anything.

Met in 2010 on a forum for a mutual interest. Became friends.
2011: Realized we needed to evaluate our status as friends when we realized we were talking about raising children together.

2011/2012: Decided we were a couple sometime in, but no possibility of being together due to being same sex couple.

June 26, 2013: DOMA overturned. American married couples ALL have the same federal rights at last! We can be a family!

June-September, 2013: Discussion about being together begins.

November 13, 2013: Meet in person to see if this could work. It's perfect. We plan to elope to Boston, MA.

March 13, 2014 Married!

May 9, 2014: Petition mailed to USCIS

May 12, 2014: NOA1.
October 27, 2014: NOA2. (5 months, 2 weeks, 1 day after NOA1)
October 31, 2014: USCIS ships file to NVC (five days after NOA2) Happy Halloween for us!

November 18, 2014: NVC receives our case (22 days after NOA2)

December 17, 2014: NVC generates case number (50 days after NOA2)

December 19, 2014: Receive AOS bill, DS-261. Submit DS-261 (52 days after NOA2)

December 20, 2014: Pay AOS Fee

January 7, 2015: Receive, pay IV Fee

January 10, 2015: Complete DS-260

Family Friendly?

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/481545-visajourney-is-a-family-friendly-site-please-post-accordingly/

Rather than repeat the 'base' from that topic, perhaps y'all could read that topic, and extend/further the conversation about 'family friendly' ? :o

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Question: what are the criteria for removing posts that are not in violation of the TOS from an Off Topic thread? I seem to recall that in Ye Olde Days, OT threads were given slightly more latitude in terms of friendly (and I mean friendly) banter and discussion. Are we now expected to be consistently on topic in Off Topic?

The mind boggles.

But you are allowed to post misleading ####### about immigration issues.

Win win?

There's nothing in TOS referencing off topic discussion. Sometimes we will intervene on behalf of an OP if they wish to maintain a specific conversation. And sometimes we remove drama imported from past instances and quantify it as off topic. If you have something specific you'd like looked at, feel free to pm me.
