Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

I was considering how to restrict that forum without creating problems. One way would be to promote members after they make xx posts into a group that would have access to posting in the forum. Until they reach xx posts they could only read the forum (but not post).

Thoughts?

I think any member that wants to post there needs to request access and agree to a modified TOS that the rules in that forum are more lenient and some material in that forum may be offensive to some. That way there is no misunderstanding what type of forum the poster is agreeing to. I used to be an admin on a board that had that same set up and it worked fine that way.

Is your thought process that new members might become offended/discouraged and therefor not benefit from the upper forums?

My understanding is that some folks believed new members were wondering into that forum early in their membership, prior to getting their feet wet on the site, and getting overwhelmed. This lead to a few issues. This would be one easy way to resolve this concern (limit posting there until they have had some time on the site).

Just take away the report button. Problem solved.

What things in that forum are you thinking should be more lenient? Is it just the way the mods interact? TOS elements?

Thanks, it wasn't clear to me what you meant.

What would that solve?

Seriously, its that the mods feel like they have to act when there is a report. Certain members, Ewok, consider people on the opposite side of the isle to be enemies and purposely lurk trying to find "gotcha" moments to report. The button is being used maliciously and sometimes, unfortunately, mods abide.

There should be more leniency in the type of content that is allowed to be posted and the interaction between members. In other words, not so family friendly. Over 18 with adult conversation. No nudity or vulgarity, but let people speak their mind within reason. Give folks more slack in that forum to be themselves and speak their minds. Instead of catering to one or two people who may be easily offended by something that most other people aren't, cater to the majority who want to be there.

The "I don't like this person and I'm going to get them in trouble" ####### that happens from people actively participating and not participating in the thread.

I see. If this is the case, then that is an issue. It sounds like some folks may be trying to game the system to ding other members -- via bringing in mods that are not as up to speed on the forum (they may spend time on other forums) and may more readily 'mod' folks.

We have regional mods in other forums to help with these types of things -- in short, an insider that would see through this and even alert the other mods when they see abuse by folks (using the report button). We had planned to add a new 'local' mod to this forum to help -- thoughts?
