Hi there,

Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong forum.

Does anyone have any advice or direction for a Green card holder applying as opposed to a US citizen?

The only thing I do know for sure is that the entire process takes longer than applying as US citizen.

Any advice would be appreciated.

As far as I know, a green card holder cannot apply for an immigrant visa for someone. I might be wrong though so wait for more answers.

That is correct, the green card holder has to first become a us citizen through naturalization first.

An LPR may petition for a spouse (not fiance). The spouse must then wait for an available visa number---about 4-5 years wait currently.

An I-130 filed by an LPR may be upgraded if the LPR naturalizes to USC. There is no wait for a visa number for the spouse of a USC.

LPR cannot petition for K1 visa but can apply for IV (file I-130) for a spouse. You should check how much is the wait for UK beneficiary. Of course you can upgrade your I-130 from 'wait' to 'current' when you acquire citizenship. It think it is prudent to petition for spouse while you are LPR even if it will take 4-5 yrs to complete the process because sometimes background check while your citizenship papers are processed may take 2-3 years (it happened with a person I know).

I-751 process:

4/06/09: Mailed I-751 to VSC by Express mail

4/07/09: Received by VSC

4/17/09: Check clearance.

4/20/09: NOA1 received in mail (receipt date: 4/08/09)

4/30/09: Biometric appt. letter received (appt. on May 15th)

5/05/09: Walk-in biometric done

9/02/09: Approval Email (touch on USCUS site)

9/03/09: Approval letter received (decision date: 8/27/09)

9/09/09: Touch, but no change in status on USCIS site.

9/11/09: Green card rec'd.
