"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Alla will graduate and get her MA-TESOL tomorrow after nearly three years!

She has worked very hard, both in class and also in the various jobs she had during this time and has basically been going non-stop 16-18 hours a day. She is looking forward to sleeping late for a few days. Then she is off to Ukraine for a few weeks. I will join her there later in August and come back with her. She finished with a 3.95 grade average.

I will not know what to do with myself once I get my "wife back" and I do not have to proof-read all her essays, lesson plans, etc.

Now she has to find a job teaching English. :P

Umm, please excuse my ignorance...BUT, if you had to proof read everything she did, how can she get a job teaching English,....Just askin'?

I'm going to go out on a limb here, but I would guess that she would send her resume to whoever is hiring followed by an interview, and then fill out the paper work and show up to work if and when she gets hired. At least that's how it usually works when you apply for a job.

Why_me, I think you missed the point and genuiness of my question. I meant that if her hubby had to proof read things for her, does this mean that her English is not strong enough to teach English?, or she did not have enough confidence in her English abilities, this is a honest question, not trying to be mean?

Your response was more ignorant and rude than my actual question....

When I was in college we used to proof read each others papers on a regular bases (study groups). I proof read my wife's essay's. It's not unusual.

Ok, fair enough. I didn't realise that was the norm here. Thanks.

In the process of getting a degree in TEACHING English, they teach you how to teach. It is not an English class. She already knew English. This is her third masters degree. The other two and (edit <---- good example, should be "are". I am a native speaker)in Russian/Russian Literature and English. She has specialists certificates (teaching certificates) from her university in Ukraine for this. She has a teaching certificate from the State of Vermont. She went through this process in order that her background would be more acceptable to native speakers that do not understand the need to proofread.

Proofreading is a common practice in any type of publishing. Magazines are proofread, newspapers are proofread. Proofreading is in no way teaching anyone anything. Are you telling me you do not proofread important documents that you write? Are you telling me that you may not have someone else proofread an important paper you were turning in for your university class? Seriously? Why would you be so casual with your school work?

Do you think that native English speakers do not make mistakes in writing? Do you think there are not mistakes that get by spellcheck? "The" instead of "they"? "Bear" instead of "bare". Do I really need to continue? Should I really even answer you? I am excusing your ignorance in doing so.

"Realise" ????? Should be "realize". "the norm" is an idiom and would not be acceptable in a university level essay. Fair enough?

So much for your Ghadi quote in your signature.

Sorry to interrupt, but 'realise' is British spelling (also preferred in Australian English), while American/Canadian spelling is 'realize'. So, you're both right here.

Not if you are turning in a paper to a US university, but it is a good reason for a person to proofread.

While I proofread her writing and even typed many of her papers as she dictated to me (I type very fast, much faster than Alla) sorry, but I couldn't be in class for her and didn't do the student teaching she did, the second part of which was university English class (first part of student teaching was ESL classes)

I am glad to help her, but the inference that she is unable to be a teacher after graduating a two year Master's course with nearly a perfect grade average is ludicrous. Seems like everyone here realised this except the one person (no doubt smarter than all the others) from Australia (where college students don't proofread their papers).

PS, then again we have the dolt that gave her a +1 for her wisdom.

Why isn't "the norm" ok? it's not slang. It means "standard or model." You WANT writing to be idiomatic. You should avoid cliches and non-standard English, but "the norm" is absolutely fine in a university-level essay.

I have to disagree with you on that one for the fact I believe it leads even further to the dumbing down of America.

I was curious myself as to what a "ghetto a$$" is. Hopefully someone can clarify this for me.

Writing well leads to the dumbing-down of America? "Idiomatic" means that it doesn't sound stilted or unnatural. Non-idiomatic writing is when you say, "Well, it's grammatically correct, but it just sounds off." (And I know Gary will say here that Russians and Ukrainians speak better English than Americans, and granted I see people who write in such a way that I'm not sure how they ever made out it out of the eighth grade, but on the whole that is emphatically not true.)

I stand corrected then. I thought "Idiomatic" means using slang as to making it sound more natural.
