Hello all,

I am glad to say that my fiancee just received her K1 visa - Thanks to all for your support.

Now I am planning ahead of what to do regarding the next step.

In the DS-230 form that we filled, there was an option on getting a SS number sent automatically..

So when will I get it?

But according to the Visa Journey flow chart, http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1flow, there is a step where you can apply for one once she gets to USA.

To me, this sounds like a double application.. ?

Thanks

You have to go to the office and apply for it. It won't come automatically for a K-1 visa. That section you checked only works (sometimes) for immigrant visas. Good luck.

I am not hijacking the topic, but I felt that it could be relevant to the OP question too. On the flow chart, I haven’t seen a time that the beneficiary could apply for the State ID. Is it after the adjustment or just before like the SSN?

Thanks

That depends on the state, because each state issues their own IDs and have different laws. Most people have to wait for their EADs or GCs.

There is no need to wait for a green card, AP, or EAD in Washington State. If you have the proper ID, you can get a State ID card.

Each state has its own ID requirements to get a state ID card. Just check on the state's web site to find out what those ID requirements are.

So do I

1. Apply 1st after waiting 1 week when she arrives ? (why - is it because the name has to go in the system 1st)

or

2. Wait till we get married and then apply - that will require no name change

Thanks again

This guide on VJ explains the process for K-1 holders and why you should wait (but not wait too long) to apply for SSN: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?autocom=custom&page=ssn

If you wait too long, and your I-94 expires, they won't issue an SSN until you have a GC. (I think)
