How did this man become such a Tea Party favorite?

NEWARK — Gov. Chris Christie signed legislation Tuesday that paves the way for the state to provide economic incentives to the long-stalled Meadowlands development project and large projects that mix commercial and residential development near urban train stations.

The bill doesn’t expand the $1.5 billion the state can spend on such transit-hub tax credits, though it does possibly accelerate their award by making more projects eligible. More than $394 million of the allowable $1.5 billion in tax credits has been approved for 10 projects.

Christie said projects that may qualify for the incentives enacted Tuesday including the the Haddon Avenue Transit Village in Camden, the Transit Village Associates Gateway project in New Brunswick and — perhaps most noticeably — the American Dream Meadowlands project, the rebooted Xanadu project in East Rutherford that could receive $300 million in incentives over 20 years to offset the $1.5 billion project being completed by the Triple Five Group.

Christie was joined at the bill signing by prominent Democrats such as Booker, Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr., state Sen. Raymond Lesniak and other lawmakers. He hailed the bill as evidence of bipartisan cooperation and directly contrasted that with the paralysis in Washington over reaching an agreement raising the limit on federal debt.

Christie said New Jersey’s economy has added 29,300 private sector jobs in last 12 months, which he said is the best 12-month period since 2005. The state has added private sector jobs for five straight months; the 38,000 jobs in that time is the most in any five-month period in 11 years.
