In all fairness, though, a big chunk of the MIC (nice acronym) budget is actually basic science research. I'd like to see that split out and remain untouched. That goes to education.

A good chunk of it is manufacturing, too. Someone makes those airplanes, tanks, trucks, ships, weapons, ammo and whatnot. So, as with any reduction in government spending, jobs - private sector jobs - would be lost. In the long run, it will benefit the economy to shed some of this non-productive stuff. In the short run, however, and especially now where we have millions out of work already, it would be a huge hit to the already weak economy.

The Repubs should take advice from Zero Sum and Sousuke. THAT's funny. They should do exactly what they were elected to do...STOP OBAMA and Democrats from doing what they want to do.

Lets see what happens next election cycle if that's how you want to frame it. In fact, if you want to go into electoral mandates, the public should be openly advocating for Obama-everything as far as maintaining his campaign platform. But you'll knee jerk against that I bet.

The public doesn't know what they want. Obama pretty much set out to do what he said he was going to do during his campaign and then 2 years later people freaked out and voted in the Republican congress to try to undo it. Now we have hodge-podge. We have the worst possible combination- Obama spending with Republican tax rates. Whatever you think about Obama, you have admit this combo has no chance of working. I'm actually bummed out this happened because for all the debating over which methods work and don't work, we actually had a real life opportunity to prove once and for all whether or not the Democrats methods would work or would fail. Now we are just back to theoretical speculation.

I think you're missing part of the point at least: the public is not an amorphous blob.

But certainly it would have been an interesting experiment to behold. Democrat agenda with Democrat funding... whatever that means. All I can say is it would be a very tragic turn of events for the American middle class to have a system of financing a modern society based on feudal market capitalism.

What kind of blob are they?

A blob that has different parts to it. Tugging against itself sometimes, coalescing together rarely; not realizing its part of the same organism (overall). With Obama, the blob mostly went in his favor in 2008. In 2010, pushback from another part of the blob had its way mostly. In 2012 I suspect all parts will go apesh!t at the voting booth, with a net effect in favor of Obama and the Democrats in part due to some of that 2010 pushback realizing it was a dupe, and in part due to more calm aspects of the blob realizing that the alternative GOP plan does not favor the overwhelming majority of the blob, but of select parts of the blob that try to control the rest of the organism.
