We should spend as much as all of Europe plus China plus Russia. If those numbers are right that still gets us down from $711 billion to $481 billion, a 32% reduction.

Speaking of Europe, how much money are we spending keeping the commies out of Germany? Before we start talking about withdrawing from Afghanistan where troops are actually doing something, I think we should start withdrawing from the areas where the biggest battle is who can drink the most during Oktoberfest.

That's just a massive jobs program. Might as well have them digging ditches at home.

The angry mob doesn't hold a populist position on the subject, so not compromising just shows what a bunch intolerant toads they are. They might be good at organizing their ilk to get to the polls as well as set up roadblocks to prevent others from voting, but that doesn't give them the majority voice. They are the quintessential form of political extremism - unwilling to compromise and unwilling to consider other solutions. If they're determined to drive our economy into a sh!t hole rather than work with others, then our economy is already fvcked.

Well the majority seems to need them to pass this and they ain't budging. They voted who they wanted to represent them. The potential Congressperson said the right things to get elected. They are going to stand by at least so far on what got them there and do as they said they would. (Surprisingly) So if the Socialist lite GOP can't get them to budge then go to the Socialists and try and get a few offset that mob as you called them.

It isn't really that hard to get them to come over. Give them what they want. The Socialists want taxes badly. They really want to spend record amounts of money and they think that soaking the rich will give them the money. Boehner just needs to let them have their tax hike. The Socialists will come running to his side. The new tide that came in wants cuts and a balanced budget amendment. Give it to them and they got the budget to send to Obama the Socialist to sign or veto.

Or just do what we all know they are going to do. They are going to make superficial cuts and make a temp budget to do again later and then send it to be signed.

And countries we protect should pay us protection money.

If you don't pay us this year, Canada, I may let al qaeda know you have no air defenses on so-and-so day... you'll pay if you know what's good for ya.

I know that's a joke. But you got it right. I'd love to see that same graph in 1938. When I lived up there in 2002-2003 and saw them going off on the US etc., I took offense a little. They pretty much have one border that protects them from all threats. They sure hated us in 2002. I was watching a protest in Montreal against the Iraq war and it was -30C. 250k people with their kids out there.

One thing I noticed that was Canada got most of their tech workforce were from countries all over the world. It was cool. It was right after 9-11. My best friend was from Pakistan. I made the comment to him one day that did you see all those Pakistanis protesting at the US Consulate burning US flags. He told me it was cold and rainy. I laughed my #### off.

The 2002 world cup was pretty cool because they had flags from all over the world on every cube. I was an immigrant just like the guy from China.

I moved to SE Asia after that and frequently went to Pakistan, Bangladesh and every country in between there while living in Bangkok. It was a blast.

The Surete du Quebec are ####### if you dont speak French, other than that, I liked it up there. I thought Detroit was cold, then I spent a winter in Montreal.

I wonder what the economic impact would be to those countries if we started shutting down our bases. I'm not even counting the devastating affect it would have on the prostitution industry.

Already happened. Look at the 2 they shut down in the Philippines.

I question the underlying assumption that Government should grow at the same rate as GDP.

At the same rate as population, perhaps, but GDP?

Population is a factor I hadn't even thought of, but of course that would explain some of rising expenses. Problem is that the population has only risen by 25% in the past 20 years and the entitlements have more than doubled. Even the population of the 65+ hasn't started to rise disproportionately yet. This is an area that is really going to get insane soon though.

In the past 20 years the population over 65 has only risen by 27%, from about 32,000,000 to 40,600,000

But by the next 20 years, it will rise by 62.5%, to 66,000,000, with the expected total population only rising by about 20-25%.

If our expense to income ratio is screwed with a retirement population of 27%, imagine how bad it will be at 62%!! Thems is gonna be interesting times and it's not too far off. 20 years ago the first gulf war ended. That's how short of a time period we are talking about here. If you just had a newborn baby, he won't even be drinking alcohol (legally) by this time. He might not be drinking after that time either because he won't be able to afford it.

I just hope that more young people like Paul Ryan will be in power by then and they'll push that greedy granny off the cliff.

And that reduction alone would be just about enough cuts to match dollar-for-dollar a debt ceiling increase that would take us comfortably through 2012. Puts the insane amount of funds that the MIC manages to pull out of our economy into perspective. But we'd rather raise the bar on affordability of higher education for our next generation than cut into the MIC's cake.

In all fairness, though, a big chunk of the MIC (nice acronym) budget is actually basic science research. I'd like to see that split out and remain untouched. That goes to education.
