McDonalds To Add Apples To Every Happy Meal

Pressure groups? They are customers. If they weren't and McD's is not interested in broadening their customer base to include them, then McD's would continue to serve fatty fries and burgers and tell these pressure groups to go and shove their business where the sun doesn't shine. That would be a poor business decision, however.

Health Nazis wouldnt be caught dead in a McDonalds unless there was a protest.

People who can look beyond the kiddie friendly marketing and who know and can actually appreciate what that food contains wouldn't be caught dead in a McDonalds.

I read menus and order accordingly wherever its available. You probably go there too.

Even then I don't go that often. And I don't need to work myself up into a ball of rage condemning consumers for purchasing what they want.

It's not the free market at work at all. It's all pressure and legislation that's been shoved down the throats of eating establishments (with over 50 employees) in the past few years.

McDonald's has offered healthy alternatives for at least the last decade if people gave a damn to actually pay attention to their menu.

Wait, is it the free market or not? Have McDonalds been offering these healthy

alternatives because it's good for business or because the big bad government

made them do it through "pressure and legislation"?

(By the way, I must have missed the piece of legislation which mandated that all

fast food restaurants have apples on their menu... got a link?)

Well no - you do have a choice about where to eat. Noone is holding a gun to anyone's head to eat at McD's or KFC etc.

Of course, these companies DO aggressively market their foods towards children (and have done so for the last 30 years at least), that's where the issue arises. When they shoehorn their products on the back major movies, offering free tie-in toys with certain meals it does put a lot of pressure on parents. Most parents I'd hope don't let their kids eat those foods on a daily basis (although the obesity problems in a lot of western countries seems to suggest otherwise). Even as a treat you'd surely still want to know that the foods you're buying for your kids do a bit more than meet the bare minimum standards for food quality.

Clearly, you're not paranoid enough to appreciate just how much the big bad government controls your food intake.

Giving the people what they want. Isn't that a good thing now? Or should the market only be free when consumers are experts at everything and thus capable of making wise choices?

Pretty simple -

McDonald's added coffees to their menu and stole a HUGE portion of Starbucks' business.

Now, with apples in Happy Meals (which is probably just the beginning) they'll start eating into Subway and other "healthy" places' profits as well.

The same people who want apples in Happy Meals are the ones who get a solid 5000 calorie meal with a large diet Coke.

"Durrr if my 6 year old eats a cheeseburger it won't be so bad because at least he ate apples after durrr"

Here's what you do: DON'T introduce your kids to fast food in the first place. Is it really that hard to make a good cheeseburger at home? No.

Kids don't know any better; they know what tastes good. Fast food is so successful because it's so full of salt and fat. The brain recognizes that, and the cycle starts. Our bodies aren't in survival mode, we don't need those empty calories.

It's cheaper to buy a week's worth of groceries, and hey, you won't get diabetes.

It would be easier for parents to do that if it weren't for pervasive and aggressive marketing from fast food chains.
