... sources familiar with S&P's thinking indicate that the Boehner plan -- which attempts to raise the debt ceiling and make cuts in two separate steps -- probably wouldn't be enough to avert a downgrade from AAA.

On the other hand, the Reid plan, which does it all at once, would be looked on more favorably by the ratings agency.

Increasing the limit and doing something that looks good on paper, but in reality not cutting anything, and in fact, increasing spending.

If you're referring to the Reid plan, it's dead in the water. Cantor won't go for it. It's either the Boehner plan (which will cut domestic spending AND give us a credit downgrade) or default.

Yep, nothing seems more attractive to the GOP than to go into 2012 against the incumbent that presided over the first ever downgrade of the credit rating of this country. It's not about the debt, it's not about the deficit, it's about the one and only goal the GOP has. If the economy takes a hit and jobless numbers rise, all the better in the eyes of the GOP.
