Lack of obedience and independence are a sign of intelligence in cats?

I would say, these two things are a sign of intelligence in any creature :D Don't know about you, but obedient and dependent people (and animals) do not rank high in my world.

Of course, as they say, to each his own.

Animals were domesticated to be our servants first and companions second. Humans are different than all animals so intelligence is measure by different standards and don't use the same scale.

In my world I rank working animals (rescue, guide, hunting etc) very high.

Of course, as they say, to each his own.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Lack of obedience and independence are a sign of intelligence in cats? Wishful thinking for cat owners. I have several stones on my property that would make wonderful pets by those standards.

Cats were domesticated to reduce the rodent population. For that I thank them. Dogs were domesticated for fishing, hunting, protection herding and about a hundred other things.

True cats can be left alone a week at a time with food, a litterbox and water so for some they are an ideal pet.

:ot: Can a fox and a dog have offspring?

It looks like it might have happened but is vary rare.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canid_hybrid

Dox

An unconfirmed female terrier/fox hybrid was reported, and later euthanized (put to sleep), in the UK. British gamekeeper folklore claims that Terrier bitches can produce offspring with dog Foxes.Other known dogs are,Alasken Malamute, sheltie, siberian huskies, and most of the hound groups. The supposed hybrids (known as a dox) are natural variation in the domestic dog. There has been a reported cross between a domestic dog and a South American fox, but the latter was a fox-like wolf, known as the maned wolf, and not a true fox.

In Saskatchewan, Canada there was another supposed dox, this time a female miniature sheltie with a wild fox. There was a litter of three, but only one survived. The surviving (a female) was sterile, and looked like an almost pure fox, with slight variations. However, the variability of dogs in appearance makes it possible to determine whether an animal is hybrid based on looks. Most Cases the Dox will have gold or yellow eyes, wired hair, and with black red and gray hairs covering most of the body.

(It may be that foxes cannot hybridize with dogs but, as crosses between horses and zebras demonstrate, differences in chromosome number are not the reason. Viable hybrids between species are possible regardless of chromosome number differences provided the gene combination in the hybrid allows for embryonic development to birth. Large differences in chromosome number, however, would make hybrid bitches so poorly fertile as to be essentially sterile. Male hybrids would be sterile due to a phenomenon called Haldane's Rule. The lack of genetically verified fox/dog hybrids indicates that viable embryos are not formed.)

 very interesting.

This cat wasn't too smart!

F**king great! How would one base that act on a scale of intelligence to a dog now? Was the cut stupid enough to claw at something attached to the fan? Or was it completely stupid enough just to hold on for the ride? A dog certainly would've let go! I think that declares the intelligence between dog and cat!

You should read up a bit on the process of dog domestication. It wasn't something as entirely one-sided as you describe.

Anyway, I like dogs best, but I'm pretty obsessed with my cats, and at least totally i love with them. I don't think anything could make me a "cat person" vs. a "dog person" since I've been a dog lady for over 20 years.

Glad you find that poor cat swinging around and then being slammed across the room so fricking funny.

I knew what I posted would offend someone. Somebody always has to find something offensive. I don't live life to please everyone and I sure as hell do not buy into being "politically correct". 100% of the human race will never be happy with one thing. Now that I think of it, I'm offended that you find such distaste in what was obviously hilarious to the majority that found it funny!

The next time one of those cats decide to run under the wheels of my car for whatever reason it decides to commit hari kari, I'll be sure to be thinking of cats all over the world! ;)
