Possibly. You're almost leading me to believe people are motivated to make more money than they are to correct the current system of unequal taxation. It's like paying more taxes is just "part of it" if you want to make more money.

Meanwhile, those on the bottom tend to accept less money as "part of it" if they want to keep (or increase) the free money they already get.

I'd rather make more than less. If making more means I have to pay more, that's cool too. I'm not going to refuse a raise because I want to avoid entering the 35% marginal tax bracket.

If you have insurance through the VA, you wouldn't be required to pay. You would simply provide a letter saying you have insurance (insurers have a term of this letter, which escapes me at the moment) and then you opt out. No big deal.

If that's the letter that says so-and-so has been insured since so-and-so date and insurance is still active, then yes... but it doesn't sound like that's the term. I have heard it before and that's not ringing a bell.

The majority of people were actually still getting raises back then - that's what I remember. The sad part is that more and more Americans don't really get to turn down those raises anymore because they're not offered any to begin with.
